New project for the 44mag Rossi 92's

Post by mickbr »

So I have been thinking about trying to get a 300 jacketed up to 1700fps in my guns. Why that arbitrary figure? a round number I guess. Also the 300 grain XTP has a decent BC of .245 which has it catching up to power of the 454 Casull and even some 45-70 factory loads at 130-150 yards. Are any of these compelling reasons, not really, neither is shooting a 44 mag at 150 yards, its just for interests sake.

There is a lot of load data showing 1300-1350fps in revolvers with conservative case length. My guess is working up some of these safely may produce the figure I need from the carbine barrel, being a 300-400fps gain not unheard of in a 20" rifle. There is one load Ive seen in a Hornady manual with H110 for 1400fps from a revolver, cant recall if the COAL is lever friendly.

There is Brian Pierces 44 mag +P heavy load data per his article too, which pushes things to 50KPSI - I recall Paco saying he felt the Rossi is captable of these levels but I'll leave that for guys like Brian and Paco who have the knowledge. Im interested to see whether regular data gets there. I figure the Rossi 92 is as safe a mechanism to try out in this regard.

I shoot a 300grgc cast, I know it's not a jacketed bullet, and I get 1750 fps out of my 24" barreled Marlin. Using 2400 powder!

Bronco, sounds like a good load with 2400, 2040ftlbs energy there. Im looking to do similar with N110 but I have a lot of 2400 on hand also. If you want to share that load feel free to PM.
