Nosler 300 grain in 44mag

Post by mickbr »

Anyone tried this one folks? I was wondering if it expands at lower speed than the 300 gn XTP. Was looking to try some at lower speeds in a carbine.

I have quite a few loaded for the Marlin 1894 carbine, but I have not tried them at lower velocities. All mine are loaded with a full charge of H110 under them. I shot about 20 sitting at the bench, checking accuracy at 50 yards. My right shoulder and upper arm were black and blue, yellow, light brown and sore for quite awhile. I have not shot any since. I am gonna use a large rubber pad on my poor old weak shoulder next time.

My Browning 92 won't stabilize 300 gr bullets even at full charge. You may want to verify your twist rate will handle them.

Jim T, yes not sure I'll be lining up for top loads with these. Id like to see if they have any utility right around subsonic. Not a lot of 44 mag bullets do, but sometimes you get lucky.

TedH these will be going in a Japchester 92 Im picking up soon. Twist I believe for these is 1:26. A little better than my Rossi at 1:30,

Hornady says their stock #45230 XTP, 300 gr bullet has a recommended velocity range of 800 to 1700 fps. The low end of that is much lower than their #45235 XTP Mag bullet. I don't know whether that 800 fps represents the lowest velocity at which it will expand reliably on a deer sized animal and furthermore I don't know how accurately it will shoot at moderate velocities. I shoot cast bullets almost exclusively and my accuracy demands are only minute of gong. I only shoot offhand and I don't shoot at paper.

Ive found Honadies numbers are gooned up as in they need a lot more speed to expand at the low end, like a couple hundred fps more. The softest 44 bullet in their roster I have found is the 200 grain XTP and it needs 950-1000fps.
