My deer season is over.

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

I really wanted to take a spike out and we needed some sausage anyway.

That little Ruger is a very nice gun.

That's how it usually works for me also, on one elk hunt I ended up within rock throwing distance of an antelope herd - in the forest no less.

I’ve got a buddy up in Susquehanna PA that’s usually filled his tags with xbow and ML before gun season arrive and he did this year as well . His ten year old grandson got his first with the Xbow early in archery but the young man still had an antlerless tag in gun season so grandpa took him out and the young man shot a big fat doe with grandpas nice new Ruger American in 6mm ARC . Think the young man took the buck and a pair of doe this year .

Nice job. Enjoy the meat. That looks like a little more than a spike to me. Seems like the smaller bucks hold onto their antlers for longer. I bet the bigger bucks have started dropping by now.

None of the bucks have shed their antlers yet. Generally that doesn’t happen until mid February or so.

There are several young bucks in his same age category who have 8 point racks.

I also saw a monster buck when I was climbing down this morning. I have not seen him before. In all, I had 12 different deer in front of me between 6:30 and 8 this morning. They all looked healthy.

Nice buck, good vittles there. I like your rifle set up for the woods, and still good for a 200 yard shot or farther. What caliber is it?

Nothing fancy, just a .308. It’s sighted for 200 and I could little it a little further.

I sight my 308's in exactly the same. You will probably be about 10 inches low at 300 or there abouts. Longest shot I ever made with a 308 was on a coyote looking straight at me, at 350 yards, with that zero, and I knew range pretty close, because of the fence lines. I held what I thought was foot over and dropped it right into his chest and I was using that same 1.5 x 5 Leupold that I think you have on your bolt gun. I had good morning light to see him good.

Most of my shots are under 100 yards. A 200 yard zero lets me put the crosshairs right on the back of a full size whitetail and it will drop right into the boiler room.

I don’t think I would take a longer shot these days and in this brush country, you really don’t see game at longer distances.

But the plan is to shoot at least 20 rounds of.308 a month at 200 yards with the goal being to really get bonded with this rifle.
