Relining barrels - anyone had it done...?

I own the Family Heirloom 32-20 that is an 1889 Marlin. It has a horribly pitted bore, and yet is in otherwise nice shape.

My son and I decided it should see some range time and maybe some game harvesting, but would like to get a quality re-lining done.

It is an octagonal barrel, so there appears to be plenty of meat to support a liner.

Anyone with advice/experience along those lines...?

Is it something any decent gunsmith could do...? If not, who CAN do it well...?

I've had a number of rifles and one revolver relined. Mostly .22s, but a couple of .32s, specifically a Remington #2 RB done up as a .32 S&W long and a Winchester Low Wall .32-20.

Only one that I was at all disappointed with was the very first one I had done, which was a Remington Model 12c, which wasn't as accurate as I had hoped after the work was done. The gunsmith who did that job did very nice work on other projects, so it's possible that the Remington was just sloppy enough with wear to not be capable of good accuracy or maybe I just never found the .22 ammo that it liked.

I would have strongly recommended the two gunsmiths that did the other relining jobs, but the more recent one (Vaughn Truman) passed on maybe half a dozen years ago and the other (Ken Emmerton) passed maybe twenty before that.

Years ago I had an octagon barreled Marlin 1893 in 32-40 relined by Redman's Rifling & Reboring in Omak, Washington.
The craftsmanship was excellent, and it takes a really close examination of the muzzle to detect that it was done.

On his website it appears that he is not currently taking on new jobs due to his backlog.

Apparently, Randall's work is still in demand.

There is a guy by Harrisburg PA that does up to muzzle loader lining jobs. I cant remember his name.
Our Fordwannabe has had a few done. Whenever I can get the time I'm going to take my 92 25-20 to him for a liner.
He cuts his liners in steps so there are shoulders to seat against.

As Gunny said I have had several done by Bob Hoyt in Fairfield Pa. He does excellent work and is very reasonably priced, HOWEVER like most people that do an excellent job at a fair price he is sometimes backed up months. He has done liners for me, threaded barrels, bored out barrels (30-30 to 38-55 and a ruined 40-65 to 50-100-4500 and built from bar stock a SBR octagon barrel for an 1894 Marlin in 45 colt. 717 642 6696 He usually won't answer after NOON. I had John Taylor do a 32-20 probably over 20 years ago. You couldn’t even find a seam at the muzzle. He did a great job.
I think he’s a member of this forum. Not sure of his current status for taking on new work.
