That's the story of so many people over so many centuries.
So sad that humans can't seem to get along and leave one another alone.

One fix is to have better religious faith which should provide a better and less envious, less violent perspective (but doesn't always).
The other is to cultivate strength against outside adversaries.

Certainly 21st Century US isn't doing a good job of either right now.

Our high school history teacher was awesome - no memorizing names-and-dates to regurgitate on tests while missing the relevance and meaning of events.

For US History, there were a couple dozen books on her reading list, and you had to pick three or four and read/report on them, comments, positive and negative. You had to present the book to the other students, and of course FELLOW STUDENTS are way tougher on you than any 'quiz' is - you can just guess on a quiz, and your wrong answer is quietly tallied, but if you fail to know something another student asks you - in front of everyone else - it is humiliating. Since I had a crush on several of the girls in class, no way could I miss anything...!

Anyway - one of the books was 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' and it definitely made an impression on the whole class.

The teacher was part American Indian herself, so had a bit of an opinion about things, but on the other hand, she didn't portray the prior occupants of North America as a bunch of peaceful mystics, either - some tribes were moreso than others, and some anything but that.

And here is what those honorable, philosophic indians did of an evening after dinner to wind down a bit before retiring for the night.....

"Having gone about eight leagues in the evening, the indians took one of their captives of another tribe and kindled a fire, each taking brands and made this wretch suffer the greatest torment. They tore out his nails and applied coals to his membrum virile. When he regained conciousness they scalped him then dropped melted fat onto the crown of his head. Then they pierced his arms near the wrists and with sticks pulled out sinews by main force then finally severing the whole limbs. This poor wretch bore the torment admirably. They begged me to join them in the torture. Much to their disappointment, I ended his torment with my arquebus...."
