actually on the early morning hours of december 26, my gggggrandfather, Casper Goebel, was captured by George Washingtons troops , when they crossed the Delaware and attacked the Hessian garrison. Casper is number 37 on the prisoner list.
Casper was interned at Lancaster pennsylvania. after 6 months or so, he joined the american army as a blue coat and fought until the end of the war. in 1799 he anglicized the name Goebel to Cable.

That's some really neat family history!
We work on a house that was one of George's secret hiding places. The house/grounds are on the National Historic Registry, not open to the public as it is a private residence.

That's cool to know that much family history...!
A patient of mine was a German kid in the 40's, and 'drafted' (you think the US draft process is harsh - he said that they basically came to the house with guns and hauled him and his father away, leaving the two sisters and mother to fend for themselves running the small farm. When the mother objected they basically said "either they come or we shoot them")
.
The funny part is I had a Nurse Practitioner working for me a few years ago who was herself a military veteran, and very patriotic. She did the man's physical, and saw scars on him in several places - so she asked what they were from. He said they were "bullet wounds, from World War 2". Of course, assuming he was in the US Army, she clasped his elderly hands, and said "Thank you for your service," then gave him a hug. I guess she did notice he kind of looked sheepish, but the look on HER face was hilarious later on when I told her his story.
He says he basically spent most of his time trying not to get shot (and he was about 6'6", so that was probably not easy. He wasn't a fan of the Hitler regime, but after the war was able to escape Germany with a beautiful young bride, and I had the pleasure of taking care of them in their 70's and 80's until both eventually passed on.

God bless you and those who came before you and will come after you doc.

Due to Draft, not all who serve are true believers in the Political Cause. Lots of gray areas. I salute those who served with honor.

I read somewhere in my history studies that only about 25% of colonists supported the Revolution. hfcable, that's a fantastic connection to the founding of our nation. I have a similar connection to the founding of New Zealand, my gggrandfather is one of the 1st 60 Europeans permanently residing in NZ. Made his living importing goods from Australia & later, the family from whaling in the Cook Strait.
