An interesting offering from Uberti

This is a 45 colt 1873 BUT with the caveat that it can handle "44mag pressure loads". And, pre-fit with a pic rail.

I'm curious too. Can't see it being adequately strong by just using better steel. Not really something I'd be in the market for but definitely interested in what they did to make this work.

I have a Uberi SAA size revolver chambered in .44 Magnum and it’s a fine gun. It’s fitted with an 1860 Army grip frame and it feels great in the hand.

Ive shot it quite a bit and see no issues with the strength or build quality.

I also have a 73 carbine that’s chambered for the.44 Magnum cartridge and it seems to be just fine as well.

It also says to use “standard” loads in .45 Colt.
So evidently you only use heavy loads in the .44 mag.

Uberti has offered the '73 in .44 mag for a few years now. The statement to use only standard loads in the Colt must be a Lawyer driven thing because there is no readily available +p ammo on the market.

I wonder if it will be offered with iron sights the drop at the butt looks awful low for use with a scope for me.

When I heard Pic Rail I figured I would see a black plastic stock. Shocked to see wood. Frankly, it looks really nice to me. If it will take Tier 2 or 3 loads in the 45 Colt, I'd be tempted to grab one.

I am pretty accepting of "tactical" leverguns like we were talking about in Doc AJ's thread ---- but putting a rail on an 1873 just looks goofy --- you dont need to bastardize it that much to mount a red dot if that is the goal

Regarding pressure -- if its stout enough to deal with 44 mag ---should take some pretty cool .45 Colt loads in the 30 - 35k psi range or therabouts

just dont try to slip in any Casull spec loads

It does look a bit odd on an 1873. Maybe I don’t think that kind of thing is odd on an 1894 because to me, an 1894 is a very ‘modern’ design, but an 1873 is to my mind a ‘vintage antique’…. I guess that’s because I grew up shooting an 1894 (mfg 1975 or so) and not thinking anything about it being some kind of ‘old gun’, whereas I never owned an 1873, and everything I read about them was talking about the ‘ weak toggle action’ and how it was ‘ only suitable for vintage low pressure cartridges’.

Kind of like although I know you could have stamped sheet metal wheels on a 1975 Shelby Mustang, Mag wheels look fine, yet putting Mag wheels on a 1940 Studebaker would look kind of odd.

Certainly a much shorter rail would do for most optics or advanced sights though. I’d rather see about 2 inches of rail, but maybe have holes drilled in it to accept a Skinner or Williams FP336 (or whatever the model is that’s designed for the top-tapped Marlins), you could probably make a short chunk of rail with an integral way to mount that type sight. That would do for red dots, Holo sights, and provide the option of aperture sights.

Still…it’s always good to see a new levergun on the market no matter what kind of set up it has…!

I look forward to hearing about it. I assume the Pic rail is just held on with screws for times you want a more traditional look. I like it for an easy Red Dot mount.

Uberti says it has 6 of the 6-40 screws holding it on. I had all my 92's drilled and tapped for pic rails so its not a big deal to me. My only concern will be how thick a pad to make so I can get a cheek weld.and still see the optic. I will remove it for our cmsa events

Not something you see every day. I wonder how they hold up to 44 Mag or heavier 45 Colt loads over time? It was pretty striking with the wood stock, not what I expected either.

I is mainly going to be my mounted shooting rifle (with the rail removed) but I will likely see what it can handle....I seem to be incapable of not pushing limits

I would like one in 44 mag. I dont shoot full magnum loads in most of the 44 carbines Ive had, but its nice having the option, and full load compatibility with your pistol.

Id really like to see one made by Winchester/Miroku.

A true shotgun butt would make it both easier to shoot with heavier loads and fit better for glass. It looks like a partially modified common 73 stock, which were generally made with too much drop in the stock. 73 carbines are better, but still not in the league of a true shotgun butt. To clarify, many call the butt on post-war 94s shotgun butts, bit they arent like the real shotgun butts of earlier years that mostly had less drop at the comb and heel, and thicker cross section both vertically and thickness wise.

I have a very similar rifle from Taylor's & Co., but mine has the straight grip, ½ rnd/oct. bbl. & curved steel buttplate. I have run some 17K psi loads in the C45S thru it... pretty much a max 45 Auto load. I have a Rossi 1892 in 45 Colt that I've run quite a few Ruger only loads thru. The only thing I see to fault the above Uberti is the lack of a dovetail blank. I'd bet their caveat on the 45 Colt loads is that there's no standardization for +P or other loading levels.
