Meat Deer

Post by Drawdown »

Well I haven't taken time towards any forums lately, but after the Appalachian Thread? Let's talk good side of here, like everywhere else! Don't laugh at my deer, I took first opportunity I got to pull trigger! Was helping my brother hunt also, hoping he'd get one. In his 2nd year ever deer hunting. He broke arm bad in Oct, slow heeling, so I was hauling us both on 4w, putting him in a good spot. Knew I'd have to do work if he did get one! He came close few days after I killed this little guy. Used my Rem 700 270Win again. 40yd shot, 40yd mad dash, died on run. Blood shower after that 270Win hit him! You can see my little home town below in the 2nd pic.
Ill send pics later poor signal right now

Nice, cant beat meat in the freezer!
My 26th birthday( early Oct)I broke my left wrist when a stand came out from under me. I was out of commission until the above elbow came off in 4 weeks. Then just cast on hand & forearm allowed me to shoot my longbow. By gun season I was out of the cast but weak on the left. I put an aluminum ladder into my stand and I'll never forget the button buck that stuck his tongue to it- I swear this is true! That little guy was stuck fast and thankfully I tied the ladder to my deer condo that I built. I was laughing so hard and loud my buddies came to see what was happening. There were taste buds frozen on!
Good on you for helping your brother.

We had a dandy hunt at his camper in E.Tenn, Sept 30, 31, Oct 1st. Plenty Fox Squirrels and took only few Grays, didn't want take up freezer space in case a deer. The next week he was on the roof, cleaned it, getting ready apply water proofing, fell off top ladder getting on it. He's very lucky he came out good as he did. Back, hip, shoulders, could've been lot worse! He's gotta have nerve surgery for his hand and elbow mid Jan. I'd sure like see him take his first deer! He was anxious. Hunted at his home few times last year. But I convinced him, I'd put him in good seat, hauled to it, in a good spot, and dress & haul it to his truck if he scored. His last hunt, we're both convinced he jumped that big one, making his way to my spot. Already bedded right after daylight, few yards from where I killed mine! The 4w pic, if zoom in, you can see him on left side, down hill in my tree seat. I killed mine directly behind me when I took the puc, uphill about 200yds, a big level bench, big buck regular trail. Mine only had one antlers with two points, he'd broke other off at base. I had bunch trail camera pics of mine, the big 10-11pt, a huge 6pt, and a 4pt.

Amen both! Lord give em to us for that reason first! A big rack is just a big bonus. I killed a really nice 8pt in 2017, and it was special, but no more than several my small ones. The 6pt i took with my Win 30-30 in 2023 is really my favorite memory. Took it on my first hunt of the spot, from hard scouting by bootleather the year previously. Set up there opening morning and he crossed a creek where I suspected 30 minutes later, one those mountain funnels, a wide bench with multiple old logging roads making the center of a wagon wheel at the creek. But it was in the holler I was born and mostly raised in, which back then, deer here was only a dream! And his aged meat for a week, was as good as it gets! Thats what hunting is all about!
