Lake Speed Jr. has done a couple of videos on filtration with the guys from Donaldson on his The Motor Oil Geek YouTube channel.
What you think about filtration is probably wrong.
One example given was a mining company swapped their giant diesel engines every 30k hours. By simply changing to a higher filtration and a LONGER filter service life they are able to extend the swap to 50k hours.
The first video is great. The second goes more geeky for those that care. The second also get into the diesel fuel circuit in depth. Who knew that modern diesel engines run their injectors at 40,000 psi and the fuel need to be cleaned down to really low micron particle size but the station pumps still use a 1970s standard filter of 30 micron? Gasoline station filters are mandated to 10 micron but gas engines are much more forgiving.

And then there is the problem with lubricity, or rather the lack thereof.Tycer wrote: ↑Fri Dec 12, 2025 7:26 am Lake Speed Jr. has done a couple of videos on filtration with the guys from Donaldson on his The Motor Oil Geek YouTube channel.

Re: For the diesel users
Now that was interesting. Guess I've been just lucky so far to keep the old duramax ticking along. My old station must have been giving me some pretty fine fuel and I didn't even know it. And they sold to some other outfit. Might spell trouble ahead.
