He would have turned 111 years old this week.
He taught me more than any other man and I still miss him.

And every time I taste a Lone Star, he comes to my mind.
He taught me to ride, to rope, to face my fears in a way that still accompanies me today.

Wonderful mentor, Scott. I never knew my grandfathers either. One was a rancher (Tonto Basin) and homebuilder and the other was a surveyor and civil engineer. They must have seen and done some things ...

Re: He would have turned 111 years old this week.
I knew half of my grandfathers, Dad's side.
My Mother's Father was an Englishman that immigrated through Canada. He took my grandmother off the reservation. He had a general store, was a justice of the peace. When my mother was born he was 82, and she has a baby brother!!
A village is named after him, Paynesville, his guns are in the Carson City museum. This was a man I wish I could have met!

My Grandfather on my Dad's side would have been 132 this year. Never met him. He died in a multi vehicle accident before I was born. Knew my Grandfather on my Mom's side. He was kicked off post at Ft Dodge in 1906 because 13 year old male children were considered to be adults by the Army at the time, and could not live on post at that age. He became a printer. His initials are still carved in the rock wall of the house he was born in. It is now the Post Office on Ft Dodge, KS.

A wonderful tribute, Scott. Short, and to the point.

Nice photo Scott, your grandad was a solid looking fella. One of my mine died last year at age 100, the other a decade ago at 90, I was close to both.

Great picture, Scott!
I was lucky to know all of my grandparents, though the one who I would have had the most in common with was my dad’s father. He was the shooter and hunter of the family. He died of heart failure when I was about ten. The rest lived well into their ‘90s and I loved them all.

I understand. I was the first grandchild and spent a lot of time with my Dad's Parents. Learned how to use a team of horses, cut and make a harness, and some German.

I'm blessed that I was close to both my grandfathers.
Last week my Pepere would have turned 108. Yesterday I carried his Fox Sterlingworth in the field and shot a pheasant with it.
I do hope my grandfathers can look down upon me and see how I turned out and see my own boys growing into men.

Awesome pic! My Dad's dad died when I was 10, so I didn't know him too well. He did let me ride around on his horse drawn wagon. Here's one of him and his team circa late 50s. Just a plain farmer who moonlighted as fiddle player for the weekend dances at the county seat.

I never knew any of my grandparents but my father was born in Germany on November 13, 1913 so would have been 112 years old just under 2 weeks ago.

Re: He would have turned 111 years old this week.
Both of my grandparents on my Dad's side were born in 1897. My grandfather died of cancer a few years before I was born, but I got into my early teens before my Dad's mom passed away. We shared a birthdate, which was always fun.
I was fortunate to know my maternal grandparents very well. My grandfather never made it past the 8th grade - because he was working by then. But he was one of the smartest men I've ever known. He could fix darn near anything. He died just over a year before Y2K was born, but Alzheimer's really robbed us of him 5 years before.
Y2K did get to know his great grandmother a bit, but now doesn't really remember her.
Grandparents are a blessing for sure. I just hope my kids will have kids (the right way) before I'm too old to enjoy time with them!

Now that that grandparents have been gone for 18 years now, I miss then more than ever!
My great grandfather died when I was 13. I still remember his stories of World War 1.

That's awesome! Great picture too.
My grandfather on my mother's side was a Maine warden in the Allagash before and during the war. The finest woodsman I ever knew. He lived until I was 27 but it wasn't enough. I never could soak up enough from that man. A few years ago I posted a whole bunch of pictures from his days in the woods.
