The Northern-most Land Action of the Civil War

Post by Old No7 »

I just learned about this history during a recent trip driving from ME, across NH, then northwest over to Lake Champlain at Burlington VT, then driving up to the northern islands of the lake and coming back south on the mainland via St. Albans, VT.

The northern most land action of the Civil War occurred in...

VERMONT !

"The St. Albans Raid was the northernmost land action of the American Civil War. Taking place in St. Albans, Vermont, on October 19, 1864, it was a raid conducted out of the Province of Canada by 21 Confederate soldiers who had recently failed in engagements with the Union Army and evaded subsequent capture in the United States.

The mission of the raid was to rob banks to raise money, and to trick the Union Army into diverting troops to defend their northern border against further raids. The Confederates obtained the money, killed a local, set the town on fire, and escaped back to Canada. This raid marked the northernmost point reached by Confederate land forces during the Civil War.

Sure news to me, Darryl. Going to pop for a Secesh uniform to do re-enactments? 8)
I had only known St. Albans for the Century Arms stamp on surplus firearms imports.

The westernmost land action of the Civil War was on March 26 - 28, 1862 in what is now Santa Fe County in north central New Mexico. The Battle of Glorietta Pass favored the Confederates who pushed the Union Army through the pass until they were forced to retreat after their supplies were destroyed and their horses and mules killed or run off. It was not New Mexico's largest battle of the war but it was significant in that it ended the Confederacy's attempts to take control of routes to California's gold and silver mines and to establish seaports on the west coast thus evading Union blockades.

Ditto. I always thought Gettysburg was the high-water mark. Thanks Darryl!

I've been to St. Albans, but I didn't know that.

Had the best seafood chowder I've ever had at,
I believe, Jeff's Maine Seafood. Recommended.
