TNP Nut 'N Fancy Marlin/Ruger reviews

Post by Streetstar »

I like this guy (sometimes) -- and the dude is an LTC -- im assuming Reserves or Nasty Guard

I find him eccentric but i still watch ----

he was detailing a new production 1894 MArlin in .38 that was a jam o matic

But got me to thinking about calibers

Locally the .44 version is flying off shelves --- whether Marlin or Henry --- the newer Miroku Winchesters are kinda' seen as a connoisseurs choice and they dont really sell well

But i recall hunting with a 1894 .44 carbine years ago and honestly --- after spending half a hunting season with it - i went back to to 30/30

Recoil when using full gas hunting ammo is darn snappy with .44 (the carbine i used was a 16" trapper length so may have played a factor ) --- and other than mag capacity , just didnt do anything the 30/30 wouldnt and was a bit unpleasant to shoot --- and before anyone says
"but you can handload .44 Specials for plinking!" --- sure -- but the darn things are finicky - i just dont have the patience to fanny burp around with it

Kind of parroted on the YouTube video where his .38/357 rifle fed FMJ .38's like a champ but got weird with RNL 357's

That said -- i do have a Winny 94 in .45 Colt -- its rock solid with anything i have ever tried but unless someone is wanting to shoot a suppressed .38 or something , why even bother with hunting with a handgun caliber carbine or rifle --- the 30/30 is awesome -- (my AO is Oklahoma - 30/30 is good for anything that walks here ---- some of you fellas in areas where the critters get bigger may have other opinions for sure --- 38-55 or up to 45-70 )

Im not a gunsmith -- but i feel the amount of slop engineered into the rifles to take varying cartridge lengths (.48/357 or .44Spl /.44mag ) is a liability somewhat and the juice isnt worth the squeeze -- but as i mentioned , my .45 Colt Winchester has been rock solid but thus far i havent taken it hunting yet

Kind of a pointless rant but i would love to hear from folks with differing opinions on the PCC's

edit: -- i used the general nomenclature for flatulence in my writing -- i find it amusing the algorithm changed it to "fanny burp" :o :D
I would have suggested --- cheek slapper, trouser heater, crop duster, - LOL - we could go on and on

Depends on where you live and are hunting, I guess.

In Ohio, deer hunting requires a straight wall case which caused a run on on the pistol cal. carbines. A lot of the guys around here were afraid of the .45-70 and never heard of a .450 Marlin or a .38-55 which i would use. This gave a boost to the .450 Bushmaster and in my opinion the rather useless .350 Legend.
It's a dumb law though, you can still hunt anything else (varmints mostly) with just about anything.

i have a couple pistol cal. rifles a Miroku '73 in .45 Colt and one of the last Remington Marlin .357 that feed anything, including .38 Spl. LWCs. I also have an Interams vintage '92 that works perfectly, but is no match rifle.

I watched the video.

My Ruger/Marlin has fed flawlessly over 700 rounds of all kinds of bullet shapes. And I think the finish is outstanding.

He pointed to groups with .357 ammo that I think were unacceptable. He seems to be having fliers like we are and he just discounts them because he wants to.

Had almost forgot the straight wall case issue —- in fact Arkansas has recently made straight wall centerfire legal in muzzleloading season (they should change the name from muzzleloading season to something else though now -). 2 local friends of mine have procured Ruger American’s chambered in 450 Bushmaster. (Black bears have gone a bit nutty in AR and there have been 2 fatal bear attacks this year)

I dont personally like how flexible the ML situation is , but the deer herd must be getting big there. They could have specified single shot rifles along with it - but nobody asked my opinion.

Regarding my opinion on using the pistol calibers for hunting
— was strictly my opinion for my uses too —-

In truth , nobody need justify their personal choices to anyone else so long as they use something appropriate for the job (and .44 and .357 most certainly are as long as we are cognizant of the range)
And i know they are fun to shoot, hold lots of rounds and are great “bump in the night” guns as long as there are no feeding issues

I have had 2 of the 45 Trappers . One would only cycle properly when you operated it beyong brisk, but with violence of action. So it was re-homed and i kept the smooth one.

Largely an academic discussion for me this year as i am re-habbing from consecutive shoulder and knee surgeries and likely will not take to the woods this season unless it is to stand watch over the beer cooler in camp

Is that the Shootist carbine you posted pics of a few months ago?

Yes, regarding accuracy i think TNP is too used to AK sized groups.

I have a few of the lever-action PCCs and use them for walks in the mountains with the dogs and lend them to begging hunters when I take them out with a red dot or low-powered scope. The Rossis needed some smoothing out, but the Marlins and Winchesters worked great. Even my wife killed her first white tail deer with a Marlin Trapper in .44 Mag and a Red Dot. For a suppressor host, I love them. 44 Mag shooting .44SPL is clap you hands quiet for close range.

If I lived and hunted in one of the "straight wall cartridge states" (I believe there are 5 or 6 states that require a straight wall cartridge), I do believe I would opt for a Henry Steel rifle, chambered in 35 cal (aka 360 Buckhammer).
Well made, great fit & finish, excellent customer support. The Henry allows two options to load & unload......the sidegate and the magazine tube.

I'm a big fan of the .30-30 and the 45 Colt. The only "hunting" I've done with the .45 Colt is the errant coyote that has crossed my back pasture while I've been there. But... the .30-30 is far more forgiving when the range is the nearly 200 yards to the back fence line. While I like the Marlin 375 & my 1886 in .45-70, the .30-30 still shines. But... when I next hit the deer trail, I might be taking along the 1885 in .32-40!
