Gun show 1893 Deluxe

Post by marlinman93 »

Tore it apart today and sure enough a broken chunk of wood was under the hammer. Also the mainspring was off center and had swung to one side stopping the action. I removed the wood, and centered the spring and it functioned fine. I tore it down to it's basic parts, which wasn't easy as it looked like it had never been apart, and fought me. But all the screws came out without any breaking, so no big deal. Forearm cap screw was missing, as was the ejector. I had both those parts, so an easy fix.
I cleaned and oiled everything, and went after the surface with 4/0 steel wool and a rag, and all the brownish rusty color came off. Not much finish, but the barrel looks more blue than before. Put it all together with the new ejector, and it functions like new. Bore is very nice, and it's a 20" half octagon barrel in .30-30. Just need to find or build a buttstock for it and it's ready to see how it shoots!

Precision Gun works. I used one of their straight stocks on my 1894 Short Rifle. And I believe I still have another unfinished buttplate if you are in need. I won't be home for a few days to search. It'll need sanding and finishing.

Precision owners are on vacation, so no orders taken until mid October. But they only list the 1893 as a crescent buttplate, and I'd like a shotgun buttplate. The site says "no custom order stocks" but I'm hoping maybe they'll allow the buttplate inletting to just not be cut and let me buy it and fit that myself?

Yes, but George is pretty high on his Marlin stock prices. He wants $250 for a plain wood semi inletted stock.
I may have an original stock located, but waiting to see for sure.

Not sure how I double posted this topic?

Was out working at the gun club this morning, and when I got home I got a reply from one of my Marlin friends who I asked about a pistol grip buttstock. Turns out he has an original buttstock checkered in A pattern for an 1889 Marlin. That's the same as the 1893/1894, except the 1889 had a longer lower tang for a lever catch that model had. This means I'd need to make a wood filler to take up the empty space behind the end of the lower tang. Still better to have a used original Marlin stock I repair, than a brand new stock.
I will wait for pictures, and if I get it I'll decide if I make a matching filler, or maybe make a filler from some horn I have and fit that. Hope his price isn't too high!

Here's the pictures I got:

It's got the right patina and age to go well with this 1893, but one small problem to deal with. The lower tangs on Model 1889 Marlins were about 1/2" longer than the 1893 and 1894 lower tangs. So it will require me to make up a filler piece of walnut behind the lower tang and blend it in. I've got the junk 336 stock that came with this rifle, so plenty of walnut to chop up to make a filler. Just waiting for my friend to tell me what he wants for this stock.

My friend said the stock is part of some Marlin parts he's selling for the widow of another Marlin guy whose passed. He said make her an offer and she'll be fine. I offered what a semi inletted would cost, and he said she was "thrilled with the generous offer". So it's on the way and hope to see it in maybe a week or less.

Thanks. Wish I'd taken a few pictures of it when I first got it! It was pretty crusty and ugly.
