Well, I broke my Bowen SBH

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

Not sure how I did it, but Hamilton asked me to send it back to him.

Pulling the hammer back doesn’t unlock the cylinder. The hammer only goes back this far.

I’d take it apart, but I want him to see it as is.

I think it’s the bolt-stop canning plunger on the hammer is either broken or stuck. He’s only seen that twice in 40 years.

Not something you see every day that's for sure!
Is it loaded? Can you get the cylinder out?

No, it’s not loaded. And Hamilton has a theory.

I will send it back tomorrow and I’m sure he will get it back to me soon.

But... ya gotta love a fella that'll stand behind his work. Especially if it turns out to be unrelated to work he did. I.e. failure of a stock part.

Hamilton is a fine gentleman.

When it left his shop it was working just fine. Something is not right but I have no doubt that he will make it right.

Hamilton is a very nice man.

When I'd sent him my SBH he gave me a call about what style I wanted the front sight to be.
I answered his question and a couple others, then he said "This one will be a dandy of a revolver." That still makes me smile every time I have it out.

On my Redhawk, Hamilton called me one morning and asked me if the gun shot a certain way for me. He had just finished firing it and it shot that way for him. He thought the barrel was turned in just beyond top dead center (a minute or two) and he asked if I wanted to turn it in one turn to straighten it out.

A very small thing but to a man who uses his guns like I do, it’s a big deal. Ruger would say that it was within specs.

The result is more than worth it to me.

I've had 2 Rugers that locked up like that.

One had a very worn hammer plunger that began binding. I replaced the plunger and spring and had no further issues. This was on a well used Single Six.

The other had some machining debris in the hole for the hammer plunger. I cleaned the hole out and polished it with fine sandpaper by spinning a piece in a drill and getting the corner of the paper up in the hole.

You very well may have diagnosed the problem.

But I’m planning on sending it back today to make sure.

Once he fixes it, I want to hear how well it is shooting. Glad to hear that he stands behind his work and more.

I had to send my Redhawk in 45 ACP/Colt to Ruger due to a lock-up issue like that.

Of course they just fixed it and returned it, without any description of what the issue was (I hate that).

Hamilton is a class act.

The hammer plunger broke which tied up the action. He’s only seen this a couple of times in his lifetime and he suspects that it is a factory heat treat problem. Because it was unrelated to the work he did and certainly wasn’t his fault, I insist on paying for the repair.

He sent me this:

Very nice of them to make good.
Maybe let them pay the freight then you send him a gift card , stipulate that he takes his wife out for dinner?

Then order yourself a few plungers and springs to have on hand!

That works too !
My neighbors used to give me bottles for snow plowing, I had to ask them to stop as I'm not a big drinker. Besides cash is better in my pocket than a bottle on the shelf.

Apparently this issue is quite rare. But I would be able to recognize the issue early now.

Sure it's rare thing but if the parts are on hand you are guaranteed it won't happen again. I know if this was my gun it would happen again , seems Murphy follows me more than he should.

No, it would happen six weeks after I forgot where I put the spares!

Then, when you order new parts, when they arrive you will put the new ones in the same good spot for you to remember. That is when you find your spares.
