Just a 'medical pearl' - Microbiome stuff I find interesting...

This podcast is one of the better ones on the 'hot topic' of the 'microbiome' - there is as usual a lot of hype and snake-oil, as with any 'new' area of health care, but on the other hand there is some clear legitimacy to the concepts - we just don't know enough about the microbiome to be as good as we'd like.

Like any new frontier, the thing to do is to just be cautious, and try not to fall for anything too gimmiky.

I can post other stuff that I find at least semi-legitimate in the medical field if there is interest. I send out a list every few weeks to my patients of stuff they may find of interest.

Yes, I found this quite fascinating. And if they have some success lessening autism in kids -- well that'd be a serious help to 21st century America...

Checking MTHFR gene alleles is potentially helpful in autism - those with either the 677 or 1298 SNP might respond favorably to something like MethylGuard Plus (in this case for the methylfolate in particular). At a minimum we check to see if the homocysteine is staying under 8 or so.
