Ding ding ding!
We have a Winner!
Bill you have your choice of prizes-
Behind door #1 is a bucket of steel cases of unknown make, 223 and 9mm.
Door #2 has an egg case full of jointer chips( good fire starter)
Door #3 is the last 9 months of vet bills!

I bought a hazelnut seedling about 6 years ago, it didn't produce any nuts the first 3 years, then maybe a dozen then the past couple years just a couple dozen.
I got some information from PENN STATE through a buddy , after reading about the propagation of hazelnuts I learned that I could get better pollination by dragging the male flowers over the female flowers. I did that earlier this spring and it worked, I got 144 nuts this year!
Hazelnuts are my favorite tree nut, I can eat them by the bag full!

Hah! Will, I am a native of Oregon, which produces 99 percent of the commercial filbert crop in the United States. We had wild hazelnut growing on our property in the Siskiyou Mountains near Medford, but I had to battle the squirrels to get even a handful of nuts. I enjoyed working with the wood, and still have an atlatl I made from it. Neat thing about hazel is that it can be "coppiced" or cut back to encourage the growth of more useful hazel poles.

Interesting Bill, I didn't know it got big enough to really do much with - wood working wize.
One of the reasons I pick them is so the squirrels don't get a taste for them!

I've tried to stratify some in hopes of growing seedlings but even following the Penn State guidelines I haven't had any luck.

Come late winter I'm going to try and root some new growth branches.

Will, the practice of coppicing hazel goes back to the Iron Age or earlier in Britain, because hazel branches were preferred as the lattice material for wattle and daub home construction, which stretches back into prehistory. Cool stuff. 8)

I figured Bill might beat me to it, since every red blooded Oregon native should spot hazel nuts, or as we called them "filberts" when we were kids. The terminology of "hazel nuts" didn't change in Oregon until the 1980's. Prior to that all hazel nut lovers in Oregon called them filberts.
We used to buy them in 50 lb. bags and store them away to dry naturally vs. roasting them. They're still my favorite nuts over all others.

Learn sumthin everyday! Thanks Bill.
Yes Vall the Latin for Hazelnuts has Filbert in it. My Native American grandmother's name was Hazel so I will always refer to them as Hazel nuts... though her favorite were pine nuts

Speaking of pine nuts- keep your eyes open for them Bill! Like I said I'll make it worth your while !! Haven't had any in a few years...
