If It Don't Wanna Go... Don't Force It!

Post by Griff »

So, Tuesday nite I drive from Nashville, TX to Smith's Grove, KY in preparation to pick up a load Thursday Morning in Horse Cave, KY. It got chilly, so I turned off my A/C and when I parked for the nite, I left my truck off. Got up and headed off to Horse Cave... and turned on the A/C... but the switch seemed a little reluctant... so I pushed a little harder. It yielded... but took some jiggling to get the fan to blow. Finally began working. I pull into the plant where I'm supposed to check it and as I reach for my parking brake... I see flames thru the slots in the A/C-heater control panel. In case you've never experienced this... it WILL increase your heart rate. By the time I got it out, quite a bit of damage had been done. The first picture is of the mounting base where the switch and the controls are mounted (backside) the mounting boss for the switch is completely burned away.

The next 3 pics are various views of the offending switch.

The last two days have been wasted in trying to get the dealer to order the right parts. I must be dense, as I don't understand what so hard to understand about, "... fan control switch..." and "...fan control switch mounting bracket..."

Then, to add insult to injury, the shipper's forklift found the apparently one weak spot in my floor!

Sadly that is my wife's motto. I'm regularly repairing things that she lost patients with and used force instead of finesse.

That's probably the 5th or 6th switch I've replaced... and at least the 2nd time I replaced the harness as the connection from that switch to harness is atrocious. Still have to find a lock thingie that keeps the cable on the temp control slide. Apparently you have to buy an assortment... to get one! Image

Glad you got the fire out before there was heavy damage. When I was a kid, my dad had a 65 Chevy pick up. The wiring harness right above the emergency brake handle under the dash caught fire. He grabbed it with his hands and pulled it out to where it no longer had electrical current in it. It burned his hands up pretty bad.
