The under-appreciated ‘truck’ (or other) gun…

Post by AJMD429 »

.
In this case, the ‘Furnace Room’ gun.
IMG_6715.jpeg
It isn’t as accurate as a good AR-15, nor as easy to accessorize, but:

It is VERY reliable,
It is just as powerful as a regular AR-15,
It is totally weatherproof,
It is very well balanced,
It hits the 8” 100 yard gong every time, and
It only took 8 shots to clean the 6” Texas Star at 50 yards.

And for some reason, I can’t really put my finger on, it is just more FUN than an AR-15. Maybe it’s because I got my first Mini-14 as a teenage kid and I didn’t get an AR-15 until I was in my 40s.

So here is three cheers for those neglected guns we tend to leave in the truck or the tacklebox or the 72 hour kit, or in my case, the furnace room. (the reason for that is if the life Stock are going nuts in the middle of the night and I need to intervene, I only have to stop at one place to get the essentials because if it’s cold out, I’m gonna want my coveralls, which are in the furnace room in the winter so they are warm to put on even if there’s nothing under them ( ), so having a rifle in there everyone in the household knows how to use makes sense. I should probably mount a light on it though….)

While not underappreciated by me, until lately the .410 shotgun has long been ignored. On the other hand I have built "the Perfect Jeep Gun" on a Mossberg 500 in .410.

Well Doc i agree on your choice of guns, i disike the AR with a passion, its like a ugly 2x6 next to a big pine tree
just no comparison, had my Mini out today & got one fast shot at a coyote & missed, in around 400yards
i got one shot, ground was full of little gullys, couldnt get on him again, no scope on the gun but not sure
if a scope would have helped?

I kept my Ruger 44 carbine in my truck in CO. it was a little light for long range coyotes but had plenty of oomph if needed. Best of all it was short & easy to get into action.
Now my truck gun is a cordless framing gun.

I keep a Mossberg Shockwave 12b and an M&P 9mm as a backup carry pistol.
The finish on the M&P is holding up quite well with the changes in temperatures, the Mossberg, not so much.
It has a long rust spot down the left side of the barrel. Thinking about having it CeraKoted.

Of course it's always nice to dream, and my wife and I would like to drive to Alaska again. This time hauling our Airstream. Ignoring the issues with Canada, this would be my preferred truck gun.

Jeepnik, this is my Canadian truck gun (Purchased from a member). I usually wait until I get about 5 miles North of the crossing to put it back on the passenger side of the F-350.

This is what I carry in the lower 48, as it is a 7.62x39 Pistol (It gives me 300 yards with thump).

Paladin,
Not a pistol, but it gives me more thump. But it's not generally a standard truck gun. It's parent worked well once so...

In the novel "Black Light," author Stephen Hunter armed his protagonist, sniper Bob Lee Swagger, with a Mini 14. Hunter is a gun guy, so apparently he has an appreciation for the Mini 14. I'd say you're in good company!

That Mini-14 would be quicker handling than an AR to me inside a truck for sure.

To me a truck gun is one that if someone breaks in and steals it, I go buy another on the way home. This Mossberg shotgun was $239. I use lower recoil single "O" buck and slugs in it. It is not loaded in the truck but have shells at the ready. If needed against Goblins you place the bead on the Goblin's belly button, you'll drill them with a slug out to 75 yards somewhere in the chest area.
