First shots with the 1873

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Finally got the new-to-me Uberti Model 1873 in .44 WCF to the range just before the forum went down. While I need to work on my 50 yards and more sight picture, the initial outing was still satisfying, especially at 25 yards, and I was delighted how little elevation to took to hit a large dirt clod on the 200-yard berm off my hind legs. The load was 25 grains of Re7 under a Montana Bullet Works 200-grain bullet lubed with SPG, in Starline brass and with a Federal 205 primer.

Very nice condition rifle. Interesting configuration to that rifle in todays modern offerings. How long is that half octagon/round barrel? How many rounds does the half magazine hold?

And now.... Why did you consider this configuration -- to be to your liking?

Black River: It is a 24-inch barrel and the magazine holds 9 rounds, for a total of 10 with one in the chamber. I have always been fond of both the look and the balance of half and three-quarter magazine lever rifles and when I saw this Dixie Uberti on Gunbroker a while back, I was fortunate to get it.

That's a Dandy Bill! I had the exact same rifle years ago but in .45 colt. Great shooter as well. I always wished it was in 44-40. that toggle link action really is addictive. Have Fun.

Looks great, Bill!

My Miroku in .45 Colt has become a favorite.
