I can’t tell you how much dope I bought armed with a two shot High Standard .22 Magnum derringer in my pocket and a couple of loose rounds.

However, I can see why a police officer would want more ammo if he’s chasing bad guys.

Yeah, and maybe it’s bad to stereotype, but think about some woman home alone with her kids, who may have a gun but not be very experienced in terms of practicing ‘combat shooting’ - maybe if one not terribly aggressive stalker tries to force his way in the door that’s one thing, but if she had a home invasion with three or four bad guys at the same time I would want her to have a whole bunch of ammunition for sure. Not that tons of ammo is going to fully compensate for lack of training, but if you have to stop four bad guys, and you’ve only got six or seven shots, you better be really skilled or really lucky. 30 shots might give better odds for most of us amateurs, myself included for sure.

Back in the mid 90s I was stationed out at Ft Irwin CA and would frequently go to the Desert Govt Land and go shooting as well as check out some of the old abandoned mine shafts. On one occasion, I was lucky enough to have been on the high side and walked up on a gang (6 members) that was cooking meth out in the area where I was kicking around. Thankfully I was not making noise and also had good cover, they never even noticed me. I sat intent above them on a outcrop of rocks and waited until they finished their business. Yes they also had firearms. Ever since that incident I carry a minimum of 20 rounds EVEN if I am only going hunting and dont expect to need more than what the magazine holds.

That's why there is a loaded M1 carbine and two spare mags next to my bed , right by the 1911 . Multiple home invaders are a thing , zombies or not.

When I worked patrol, I carried my required 38 Spl w/18 rounds, and a backup 1911 with 11 magazines, along with the 870, & 6 rounds; and was often criticised by other Deputies for over-reacting to unknown threats. That is until a couple of officer involved shootings in the late '80s. The first in our Dept. in over 40 years.

How did you carry 11 1911 magazines?

We had officer involved shootings all the time. I was involved in three fatal shootings myself. But I never carried that much ammo and I never needed more than was in the pistol.

Loose in my posse box, along with the 1911 itself. Being a combat vet, more ammo is always welcome. The only guys that did the criticizing were younger, w/o combet experience... no criticism on my part, just a difference of perspective. While a couple of the cities had several officer involved shootings, the county at large didn't.

Some years back in the same area as Horse soldier I had an uncomfortable encounter with some miscreants. All I had was an AR-7. It worked by merely being there, but had anything more happened that 8 round magazine would have been woefully inadequate. I never made that mistake again. The San Bernadino sheriff deputy with me never forgot his side arm again either.

Just the 10 rounds of Hornady .380 Critical Defense in the little Bodyguard 2.0. I know it is "de minimis."
At the house, though, the Mossberg pump holds a dozen Aguila shorty shells loaded with buckshot. If that isn't enough to save my bacon, then I will conclude that God wanted to call me home.

I always carry spare ammo, even though my life doesn't entail chasing bad guys into caves or buildings anymore. Whether it's a revolver or semi, I"ve always got at least one reload. I've usually got extra ammo on whatever long gun I've got in the truck with me.

No LE or military service habits with me. Plus, I live in a sparsely populated and safe state.
However, I usually have ammo close. On my person, I only usually carry a spare 1911 mag or a couple speed loaders depending on the carry gun. But in my vehicles I have stashed between 50 and a hundred rounds for my truck/Jeep carbine and my carry handgun. I'm usually not too far from these vehicles.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.
