It's a wonderfully versatile cartridge, and can be loaded from oooh to ouch.
My favorite utility load was the Lee 340 over about 15 grains of Unique.

I have two 45-70's . A Marlin for Deer Hunting and an 86/71 to use for weight training. It's good to know It will take anything in Ohio including the Zoo.

Eh. I know the 45-70 is a great cartridge. The fact that it's been around since 1873 and is still in use says it all.
I have or have had Trapdoors, 1886s, 1881 Marlins, and a 1972 style 1895 Marlin. They are all great rifles.
However, it seems the last 10 years or so, everyone up here is using them, and they all seem to think they are the first to think of it and are doing something special. And the shorter the barrel, the better they are.
I have a good friend who guides up north and specializes in bear hunts. He told me he cringes every time someone shows up with a 45-70. They all seem to drink the cool aid and think they can just point it in the general direction and it causes instant death. He said he has chased or lost more bear from hunters shooting 45-70s, and Guide guns in particular, than anything else over the last 20 years or so.

It ain't the gun or the caliber. It's the shooter. Regardless of what action type, caliber of any other detail, the hunters that hit game poorly would do it with whatever they use.
The reason is likely very simple. Many guided hunts are expensive. Many of the hunters are inexperienced and expect the guide to do all the work. Including cleaning up their failures. I've personally seen "hunters" that first probably couldn't pass the hunter safety course, and second think money will make up for lack of skill. I don't really think the term "slob hunter" applies. I think "entitled hunter" is more like it.

Absolutely. I agree 100%.
It's not just the 45-70. Now it's the "celebrity trackers". They all have YouTube channels and FB pages. Part of the uniform is the Remington 7600 carbine in 30-06 with a peep sight. They all hunt the "big woods". Its turned into a money making, reality show venture. Makes me sick.

There is a very large ranch nearby. They've had hunting on it for decades. In the beginning it was pretty much get permission and go. Now they sell annual memberships. The top one is $31,000. Obviously it's a rich man only hunting spot. On the plus side, there are fewer folks hunting on public land these days. The advantage of living in a highly liberal gun fearing city.
