Back in the 90's we used to do Car Shoots once in awhile. Get an old car ... drag it where we can shoot it ... shoot it full of holes and then call the scrap metal guys to come get it. They usually laughed the entire time they were loading 'em up.
On one Car Shoot I hid a pound of Tannerite in the trunk of the car and didn't tell anyone. We shot for about 20 minutes before someone hit it. It blew the trunk lid 50 feet into the air and parts landed 100 yards away ... luckily away from us. It was quite impressive.

Re: Car Shoots
Buddy of mine, had an older brother had a 67 Ford pickup on the family's farm. One day my buddy and I were at the dump shooting what we could. On the way back to the house I said
I bet you can't hit the mirror, this started 2 years of abuse on his brother's pickup.
We shot smiley faces in it, all kinds of high power , rim fire, shotgun, detonation things. Not a square inch of that truck that didn't have a hole in it.
His brother came home saw his truck and almost strangled us before his sense of humor took hold.
When the scrap guy was called it had sunk deep enough that it wouldn't winch onto the rollback. A trackhoe was brought in to pic it up. In mid air if fell apart so a hole was dug and buried.

The Tannerite gag is a good one Jim.
We usually had one or two junkers available at the Otero County range for tactical training, including learning how windshields affect bullet paths. I think they were too far gone even to be hauled to Juarez.

When my son did 4-H Shooting Sports, one of the instructors was an FFL and City Police Officer. He made sure that each year the kids got a chance to go out to the police range and shoot at an old car.
That was pretty cool.
As a kid, one of the neighbors who also lived along the river, used to put junk cars just over the bank to slow erosion, so to this day there's about a quarter mile of old vehicles barely visible among the tree roots that have taken over their job. A couple of those automobilies were frequent victims of our shooting adventures when we were in grade school and on up.

Re: Car Shoots
When I was teaching all the time, we would sometimes do vehicle shoots to test various types and calibers of ammo. The results were pretty fascinating. Good times!

Re: Car Shoots
Best "car" shoot I ever witnessed was at Cuddeback range. Sometimes stole a camper and parked in on the range. Monday morning the Phantoms started straffing practice. In short order the new ground target was annihilated.
It was about that time the observers realized there weren't any new targets.
Panic ensued, gunnery was halted and it was determined someone had to go out and inspect the camper. Now to drive there, with unexploded ammunition dating back to WWII was tantamount to suicide.
It was decided the best course of action was to have someone lowered by hoist from the Husky helo. A "volunteer" was selected and the operation commenced.
Fears of the worst, some family camping over the weekend, were quickly put to rest. To my knowledge, unless they've retired the range and "made it safe" the camper (or whatever's left of it) is still there.

Re: Car Shoots
I knew some guys who did car shoots. Often they would put a mannequin in the drivers seat with a can of red spray paint inside the head.
The scrap iron guys who hauled them away said they had people nearly run off the road while going by their truck as they were driving down the road. Seeing what looked like a bloody head-shot corpse in the drivers seat nearly caused several accidents.
