Winchester M64 Carbine 20" FULCRUM POINT one hander
Anybody got one on hand?
(Or should I say, IN Hand)
If you "one hand" it, thumb over receiver ring where barrel threads in, does it carry level
Or's the muzzle point up; butt heavy
(I think they will carry level as my 20" M71 does so)

I will check this for you tomorrow. Also against a standard 64 and a standard 94 carbine.

Re: Winchester M64 Carbine 20" FULCRUM POINT one hander
Ok here goes....
First I did my standard 20" model 64. Only thing of note is the factory rear sight is replaced with a filler and there is a 56 Lyman installed. It balances at 3/4 of an inch behind the link pin.
Next is a standard 24" model 64. Both 64s are in 30WCF. Only caveat is the 24" has the standard sight instead of the 56. It balances 1/4" in front of the link pin.
Next up is a standard 1894 20" SRC from 1903. Also in 30WCF. Balance is 1/8" in front of the link pin.
As a bonus I threw in my old factory hybrid. This is a standard 24" model 64 in front of the receiver. The receiver and stock is an early 1894 rifle configuration with a crescent butt straight rifle stock. This rifle is chambered in 32WS. Balance is 5/8" in front of the link pin.
This is the first time I'd done this, and it confirms a few things for me. First is that the standard model 64 had balance as design parameter from the get go. Also, as I stated in the post about trappers, the heavy pistol grip stocks have a definite effect on the balance with the shorter barrels, favoring towards the butt. Even when utilizing a shorter magazine when compared to a standard SRC. For me at least, a 20" barrel is best served with a straight grip.

So Cool
Thanks

Re: Winchester M64 Carbine 20" FULCRUM POINT one hander
21"
This carries hand around receiver ring/thumb on barrel/wood
Note: The downward barrel tip
I notice this whenever I carry it that its more of a "snow/mud SCOOP" closer to the ground....sketches me out the barrel crowns gonna tap something.
Shoots offhand NICELY though, real nice.

20"
This carries just right, for me, no fingers on wood or barrel, hand is on all metal.
This was too sensitive to balance on pencil, w the round belly and heavy weight. Had to put it on the flat.

When carrying a 24 or 26 inch rifle in deep snow or wet weather, the old standby was to tape the end of the barrel. This works ok until you have to replace it in the cold and wet.
I've found a better solution is to use rubber end mill tube caps. They can be reused or replaced no matter the conditions. They can also be shot through without any meaningful shot variation at normal ranges.

Haha thank you! It's my gun room. But it's where I do my best "living".
