help wanted

Post by Grizz »

Talk of long range shooting always interests me. It is possible that I could some day be passing by the 1000+ yard steel buffalo, and could possibly have suitable 45/70s.

This is my single shot rifle, it liked 460Gr cast at short range.
I also have a Brownchester 1886 that likes the same 460.

BUT, if you were to take these to a thousand yard rifle range, what load would be best for the distant white buffalo? By bullet weight and muzzle velocity, what is the best 1000 yard plinker?

Thanks in advance for info . . . I'd like to load up a hundred or so, just in case . . :)

Well Grizz, us buffalo shooters here in Central Oregon shoot monthly (4th weekend of the month) April - October. Come on down and give 'er a try. (Heck, it's even on the way to Glass Butte). We shoot the steel buffalo on out to 1200 yards so you'll need a lot taller sight (like a 4" staff for a tang sight). And the wind blows so you need some pretty good windage adjustableness too.

And while I don't seem to be competitive in the game I do get to see what all the top shooters here are using. And in 45/70, 45/90 etc. I think my 520 grain bullet is the lightest being used. We all stuff in all the black powder the case will hold, and I understand that the BPCR bunch who shoot paper targets have recently started allowing duplex loads where you put in 7 or 8 grains of something like RL-7 or 3031 and then pile the black stuff on top. Then a wad, then a little slip of paper (I cut mine out of magazine pages) then the 530 or heavier bullet. All the top shooters wipe their bore after each shot. I haven't done that yet -- maybe one of the reasons I'm not competitive? My 45/70 is getting a bit under 1200 fps this way; the 45/90 guys more like 1300 fps.

We're not picky about front sights. Everybody is using some version of globe front sight.
