Ported barrels and lead bullets

Post by 4t5 »

Do they work well together or do the ports just lead up ?

4t5, I once had a beautiful Ruger Tropical Rifle in .458 that was ported. I eventually sold it because shooting cast bullets, it accumulated lead on the front sight that was extremely hard to remove. The ports, which were the narrow Magnaport brand never plugged up.

Thanks Walt , I have a Marlin 1894p , and a Marlin 24” cowboy.
the last year or so I have been loading lead in my revolvers , and was considering the rifle, I guess I’ll put them thru the cowboy instead.

In skool I put together a Ruger Mk2 10"bbl and I installed a muzzle break with only the top third drilled to keep muzzle flip to a minimum. Yes it gets a little lead but nothing to worry me about.

I had a Dan Wesson 44 pistol pac. It had the factory comped bbl and shrouds, it was accurate with jacketed and gas checked lead but with softer lead, it leaded like a forcing cone just at the muzzle past the ports! I think maybe it was from gas cutting at the ports. Of course I was young and dumb…..I only shot heavy loads with 296 and 2400 so I can’t say for lighter loads. Sold it but wish I hadn’t…….like I said young and dumb!

Had a High Standard Supermatic I shot matches with, and at the end of the season I always had to clean lead out of the compensator ports. Fortunately it was removable, so I just put some cleaner in my sonic cleaner and dropped it in to let it run for a few hours. A friend had a earlier HS pistol with built in ports and he said he used mercury to remove the lead. He collected mercury from mercury switches tossed away at the plant, and just stuck the end of the barrel in the jar and left it overnight. Next day the lead was gone.

Amazon sells a Lead remover.

I have used this and it worked well enough.
