Not a lever, But .458 SOCOM

Post by Paladin »

I hadn't fired this SBR from the time I brought it south from Alaska and thought I would check the Zero. The SBR is a 458 SOCOM I have a full-size16 inch rifle in the locker in Alaska and had this SBR as a pistol there before ATF changed the rules and brought it south. Now on an IWI SBR, I wanted to check the zero of the Red Dot.
With a shooting bench set up at the 125-yard line, I fired one round. Holding on the forehead it hit two inches low. It was a 350 Gr ballistic tip hitting the target hard enough to flip the spinner in the center with out contacting it.

I've got a similar pair of 50 Beowulfs (Carbine and SBR). I like the concept quite a bit, even though in Indiana there is little practical 'need' for either. However there is no reason one couldn't hunt whitetail with them - similar ballistics as the 500 S&W or 45-70.

The carbine is easily good for 3 shots in 3 inches at 100 yards with the 4x scope I have on it (which means I can barely see the 4" target at that range). Probably half that with a 12x, which is what I need to shoot ANY gun accurately at that range (don't laugh - I have a 10-40x on one of my AR's and it's the one I can hit a dime with at 100 yards - must've done too much of something as a teenager so my vision got bad... :o  ). Haven't shot the SBR yet other than for function (it puts the FUN in FUNction), but hopefully it is fairly accurate too.

puts clean holes thru propane bottles :) . 'twoud be a fine companion in the bear woods where there are bears that can outrun a quarter horse, and decapitate someone with one swipe, silently. If i could only hear them coming!!!

I know for a fact the displacement will blow the guts clean out of a deer when shot behind the front shoulder. It looked like a grenade went off inside it

We tried a shot on a doe with a .50 (BMG) at 700 yards once it was like a meat balloon, with nothing left to eat.

Gotta load a solid bullet of some sort and use minimal velocity and that really helps.

my .5 Underwood advertises 1775 fps with a 350Gr XTP . . . at AR 15 pressures. seems adequate, eh?

I have not shot my .458 SoCom enough to get it broken in.

i was thinking of getting a 458 upper so I could use the bullets i already have. then in an instant of teenageritis i bought the 50 upper instead, just because i could. i have shot it very little. function checks with a couple different loads in the rifle and pistol. at least it's an easy way to get a companion pistol setup that uses the exact same loads . . .

i got the uppers and the reloading dies and some bullits about thirty minutes before the huge spending spree arrived to clean out Everything. using underwood ammo to develop a base line, but not actively pursuing it.

we're getting a good look at the full super moon here, and may see some of the eclipse, depending on trees and clouds.

all the best,
