Somewhat rare bird H&R Targeteer
Found this 1940's era Targeteer made after war utilizing some of the Reising design parts . Factory Lyman 55 Peep.
H&R broach cut rifling . Initially disappointed in accuracy
With some trial and error I found the heavy tapered barrel was whipping causing accuracy issues. Used paper shim in the floated forend to put barrel tension and improved.
Probably bed last 1 1/2" of forend to cure permenatly.

The top target I had already shot six brands of ammo with same results. The vertical stringing was the clue to barrel whip. This rifle has a heavy barrel over 1 1/16" rapid taper with half the forend floated.
So far CCI SV and Norma Tac .22 have been best.

Neat, I was not aware of these. Now I need to add one to my wish list along with the MAS 45.

Pat, what is the knurled thumb screw for on the left side of the receiver?

Pat, I bet that beauty will give you much nicer results as you continue to work with her. Great find!
Reminds me I have a Winchester Model 75 I need to get out and fool with.

I hope so Bill, I plan to try some Wolf Match and few others to see what it likes. I'll probably bed about 1 1/2" of forend for slight tension for more permanent solution . It feels good in the hand.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Mon Mar 10, 2025 7:51 am Pat, I bet that beauty will give you much nicer results as you continue to work with her. Great find!

They started as the model 65 training rifle , after WW2 several models came about using the Reising mag .

The time period was 1946-1949 IIRC

Interesting history Pat, thank you. I picked up a Leatherneck from a friend about 30 years ago and gave it to my son. He really likes it and it shoots well. I never realized until your post that they used some Reising parts or when they were made.
