Wow that's cool as all get out that you still have that.
Mine is a Daisy Pal. I couldn't cock it. My dad made a box trap down cellar and he would cock it and hand it to me to shoot. I can remember that like it was yesterday.

That single shot had a removable barrel and my Dad hid it from me so I could only fire corks out of it but he didn't hide it that well as I soon found it and helped myself to my brother's ammo, you could push a .177 pellet in the breech end or drop a BB down the muzzle. My Dad had that gun since the first world war, his brother brought it over from the US whist in the Merchant Navy. It still works but only just and yes it was difficult to cock back then but I still blame it for my love of leveractions :D

Hey OL!
Haha yeah. We certainly have woodpeckers and tree cracks! We had a warm spell and some rain a week or so ago then it turned cold. I took a ride up to camp to see if I could drive in. The snow was pretty frozen so I got in with no problem. It was around 10 degrees with a little breeze. No big cold so far this winter, but we'll get some I'm sure.
I'm headed up today with dad in tow.
If the old JD will start, I may cut, yard, and buck some more wood. Been cutting what ash I can. Dam emerald ash borers have just decimated the ash up here. It's good firewood cause it doesn't need much dry time (as I'm sure you know). The baseball bat industry is going to be hurting in a few years once it's all gone. We had 2 producers right here in town. One is a good friend of mine. He already sold out.

The snow here is frozen it got to about 4" and started to thaw but then temperature dropped and froze everything, just a few miles away everywhere was green and when I went grocery shopping my car was the only one with snow on the roof.

Well I didn't get as much done as I wanted at camp yesterday, but I was at camp, so it was still a win.
It was about 15 degrees, so I got a fire going and warmed the camp up. I took a walk and scouted a few trees to cut. There was a hornbeam that was leaning at a pretty good angle over my dad's 4 wheeler trail down behind camp. There was big ash across the trail from it that was a candidate too. That corner down my twitch road where I'd been cutting was still soft despite all the cold, so I didn't want to run the tractor that way. The hill in front of camp drains through there, and that warm up and rain from a week ago really got some water running.
The wind was up so we made a pot of coffee and gave it some time to see if it would drop. It was no better by noon so I walked down back and cut the horbeam. I limbed and bucked it in place. I didn't dare cut the ash with that wind. I just didn't feel comfortable with it so I left it. No sense in starting the tractor so we left the tarp on it. Heated up some soup for lunch, then I went out and split a bunch of the wood I cut the last time we were up.

That sounds like a productive and fun day even if you didn't get a lot done....a day in the woods is worth a year anywhere else :D
The snow is still hanging on here with more expected, no salt on the highway up here so black ice everywhere, I only slipped on my butt once so far..

Looks like winter over there buddy! Cold and windy here. Snow squalls all day yesterday.
I have a Saniflo pump type flush in my cellar half bath. We must have had it 20 years at least. I'd never even seen one till we put it in. I didn't think it would work 6 months, but I gotta say, this thing has been impressive. There is a thin rubber membrane that controls the pump switch. It works on the pressure of the water level. I had to change it about 10 years ago, and it's acting up again.
Yesterday I disconnected everything and slid the box with the pump unit out. The top pops off and exposes everything inside the holding tank. I'll let you imagine what the inside looks like. Last time I put it out back and hosed it out, but January in Maine isn't a real good time for that. It's supposed to be 30 Monday, so maybe. I have to order the parts today. It's like 50 bucks for the little rubber membrane, and 20 for the plastic clips that hold it on. It's ridiculous, but it does last quite a while I guess.
Anyway.....it's literally a chyt job. :?

Holy smokes that's awesome! Now that is old. Be neat to see that. There are rock walls everywhere here. All through the woods. But nothing with that kind of age on it. And usually not built with that kind of care and skill.

We are back to 24f tomorrow.
I lent my son the 16 gauge for a mixed pheasant and snipe shoot with his boss tomorrow, I don't know what his boss will think of the hammer gun but he uses a 16 gauge himself.
My son will pick up his new rifle on Monday and may snag a 20 gauge O/U that is straight stocked and double triggers 8) I would describe his rifle but it's a bolt action so too boring..

I don't like the 3" 20 gauge the standard loads have always served me well. Same with all shotguns I think putting too much shot in the shells doesn't make for better patterns, the old timers knew what they were doing a couple of hundred years ago when standard loads were worked out.... :)
Traditional English shotguns are lighter and fire lighter loads than American shotguns so I suppose I grew up thinking standard loads rather than magnum loads but I do love them American Parkers though... 8)

The issue is more that it is capable of the magnum loads not that many went through it. It is on the smaller frame the the first ones.

For me it's the "crow bar" type shotguns. A pump or semi auto with 8 or 9 inches of receiver with a 28" barrel added to it. I don't care for that. A double with the same tubes is way shorter, and a st if 26" barrels is even better.
For me, the best thing to happen was the screw in chokes. Now you can get a short barrel that isn't useless as a hunting shotgun. I have one if the little 20ga 870s with a 21" barrel. Its a slick little rig. I also have a Mossberg 12ga with a 20" that I can get in the Jeep and still have room for myself. I never use it though. I use the little Remington much more. I have a beautiful Winchester model 12 TD 20ga made in 1919 with a 28" modified barrel but I never use it due to length.
All my doubles are too old for screw in chokes, but my Sarasquetta 16ga is 26" and it's pretty sweet.

OS I hear you, my last couple of 20 gauges I had were chambered for 3" magnum but after testing the patterns I rarely used the 3" shells , I did use the magnum shells for Foxes and I tried them on Geese but was not impressed. The good old 16 gauge with 15/16th of lead always works well for me although it seems that 1oz is the most common load over here.
Jay I have given up on 12 gauge pumps they seem just a tad too big for comfort but that could be just me shrinking with age....

Hey, Jay!

I have one of those youth Remington 870s as well that I bought for our son when he was growing up. With a slip-on recoil pad its LOP is the same as my full-sized 870. Pretty handy, especially since it has screw-in choke tubes.

Our son is now in his mid 30s and has moved on to "better", more expensive rifles and shotguns and the old youth model 870 and a 12 ga 1100 that I gave him still live with me.

Yeah I got mime cheap too. I also have a Winchester 1300XTR Featherweight with a 21" barrel with Winchoke. I really like that one. It's technically my kids, along with a pile of other stuff around here. I give him guns but he leaves them here cause he doesn't want to take them to Alaska. I even bought a couple Smith revolvers they wouldn't ship to Alaska. He paid me but left them here.

When you start getting to about 20 below it starts feeling cold. Put a wind on it, and anything below zero gets to you unless you're really dressed for it.

The weather over here is all over the place sub zero one day and 48f the next .
My son picked up his new .243 bolt action rifle, synthetic stock and no iron sights he even has a silencer for it so definitely not my cup of tea but I'm sure he will put a lot of meat in the freezer with it. The 20 gauge shotgun he looked at had issues so he left it there :(
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.
