.50 Alaskan barrel twist rate and diameter at chamber/muzzle?

Post by EG73 »

Hey guys,

If one was to have a .50 Alaskan built with say a 22” barrel (round or hex) what diameter should it be at the muzzle and chamber region?

Also twist rate? The guy makes his own barrels in 1/8, 1/13, 1/15.

a 1-15" twist should be more than enough and as far as barrel dimensions, what action are you going to use? I had a Pedersoli Sharps rebored to 50 AK by JES so chamber/muzzle dimensions have plenty of "meat". Now, an 1895 Marlin might be getting fairly thin.

ImageI had a Browning- Winchester Model 71 converted ( rebore of factory barrel) to 50 Alaskan, and cut short and handy to 16.75”. The barrel is fairly thin at the business end.
Also had a Ruger no 1 bored out and trimmed as well it has much more meat than needed, but the extra weight is welcome for recoil.

The 1895 Marlin is a Wild West Guns Conversion, and is about identical in thickness to the M71, although the marlin is a 20” barrel. Recoil gets a little sporty with bullets over 500 grains, but as it’s such a large diameter straight wall case, it’s easy to keep the pressures down. The heavy barreled No 1 is chambered a little long to accommodate 50-110 cartridges, which is the next step up, and as a single shot can use more aerodynamic projectiles. The brake, although not pretty really helps with shoulder pain.

.
That muzzle brake is well done and about as discreet as you can make one. I have an Encore barrel from Match Grade Machine that isn't 'subtle', as the barrel is stainless steel, so the holes are pretty obvious, but it was finished so well I was about to return it, because "I wanted a removable muzzle brake, so I could use a suppressor". Then literally as the phone was ringing, I saw the faintest line in the finish and realized it was indeed removable.

Speaking of such - what's the PISTOL chambered in...???

Sorry, yeah a marlin 1895. Maybe even a 20” barrel. For some reason Alaskans are usually built shorter so I’d like to do that also. If I ever get a .50-110 built it’ll sport 26”.

Some nice rifles but does anyone have any muzzle OD’s?

Those 4 in that pic are all 50 Alaskans, including the 12” pistol ( with a huge brake as well) the Winchester and No 1 will take 50-110’s, but realistically a 500 Linebaugh Maximum ( they cycle well in the lever guns) will go thru a Big moose, Bison, or do a Quigley on hogs. I like pistol recoil z lot better than rifle recoil. There is just something magical about those huge cartridges dropping in a chamber!

Don't know the dimensions, but when Lee Martin documented his build on a Siamese he used a Pac-Nor blank with a 1-18" twist. They'd probably tell you the external dimensions.
