Finally! Meat in the Freezer

Post by jkbrea »

I hunted hard for elk this year. I figure I hiked close to 80 miles this year from Sept 15 to early Dec in temperatures ranging from 80° to 9°. Early on was too warm and they just weren't moving much where I hunt. When it finally snowed it wasn't enough to push them down from the park until after most units closed. Luckily I had purchased an extra private property tag.
My friend owns a few hundred acres where he keeps cattle. He called me Friday and said a herd had moved in. An hour later I had a big cow! 135 yards from his back porch. It wasn't really challenging, other than getting stuck in the snow for a bit, but I figure I earned this one.

I agree you earned that venison. I’d rather eat elk than deer any day. 8) 8) 8)

Thanks. I ruined 2 of those Cabela deer hoists! A cow is about 400 lbs after dressing it out. My brother had a friend make this hoist . It comes apart in three pieces. Weighs about 75 lbs total. I had a friend weld the center round plate on it so once the elk is up, I can spin it around and drop it in the bed. I'm thinking of putting a 110v hoist on it. Cranking it by hand is soooo slow..

I used a Tikka 30-06 with Hornady precision hunter 178 grain. I wanted to use a 45-70 but had no idea what the range was going to be. I also have a 6.5 CM I wanted to use because it's suppressed but there are homes around and I wanted it to go down quick. It would've been horrible having to track it through a housing area!!

Great photo!! Yes some times a guy gets a easy one, a big Elk can be alot of work
going back to the pickup while Elk hunting, there i spot a cow bout 50 yds. ( thick timber)
so i give her a shot & she took off heading towards the pickup, she fell on the 2 track road
i was parked by, that was the only easy one i ever shot
