HDNet - John Wayne Movies

Post by samsi »

For those that have the HDNet Movie Channel available, they've been showing many of the old pre-WW2 Monogram/Lone Star Pictures John Wayne Westerns this week. Most appear to have been filmed at and around what became Gene Autry's Melody Ranch. The oldest Duke film I'd seen up to now was Stagecoach so these are a lot of fun, especially seeing the 20-something year old Wayne doing his own stunts, shooting the guns out of the bad guys hands and always getting the girl in the end!

I've been letting the TV run in the background with them on all week since it's better entertainment than 99% of everything else on the tube.

I have watched quite a few of those old B/W John Wayne movies, can't say enjoyed the ones where John Wayne sings though... :?

Yep, The Duke-As-Singing-Cowboy was a little tough to watch. Fortunately it appears they only tried that a couple times before deciding it was nowhere near his wheelhouse.

I think it was as "Singing Sandy" in one of his early black & white movies (?)

The longest 3 hours of my life was when I watched the movie "The Searchers". It was supposed to be a masterpiece.

I prefer McKlintock, the Cowboys, El Dorado, and the Shootist.
