learn to lip read. i was born partially deaf, and was taught in second grade. couple that with hearing aids in both ears helps a long ways. not a perfect solution, but better then nothing. trust me being deaf is better then being blind.only downside of lip reading, is seeing what people say about you from across the room.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 10:15 am I was told five years ago I would benefit from hearing aids, but it has gotten to the point that with any background noise at all -- even a radio down low -- I cannot make out hal the words my honey says to me. Gee, that's what I was going to post...
I didn't know that, thank you.AJMD429 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 9:26 pm .
One very important thing to consider. If you’re on the fence about getting some kind of hearing aids, is that there is a VERY CLEAR ASSOCIATION OF HEARING LOSS LEADING TO EARLIER DEMENTIA.
There is a lot of speculation as to the cause, and probably a lot of it is sophisticated neurologic stuff, although some of it may simply be that once you are unable to hear, people tend to not bother talking to you as much. That might seem like a blessing if you get tired of chatty people, but, the result may well be less neurologic, stimulation and earlier dementia.
I see this in the healthcare environment all the time, if someone comes in without their hearing aid, it’s just too much bother to ask them very many questions, so you just sort of guess what’s going on. It’s sad, but I see that a lot of times when I am with a patient and there is another doctor or nurse talking to them. I’m sure the same thing happens at home. Nobody wants to try to carry on a conversation with someone who can’t understand half of what you’re saying, particularly when it seems obvious that they are doing that intentionally because they don’t bother to wear their hearing aid. So you either don’t converse at all, or you keep conversations down to the third grade level to minimize words; no doubt that lack of cognitive stimulation doesn’t help any.
trust me, a lot o-f what you are missing is not worth hearing anyways, sometimes bein deaf can a blessing. my boss told me i have selective hearing. i told him yep. not hearing you today, tomorrow not looking much better.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 2:03 pm Will, yes, Skilsaws, Sawzalls, lawn mowers, chainsaws, airshow addictions plus shooting. 2 great questions.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2024 12:01 pm Thanks for the laughs gentlemen. Grizz, where do you get your hearing horns? Any problems with airport security?
you are lucky. my hearings aids are bluetooth compatible, but only with iphones , i use android phone. not spending 1500 bucks for a phone i don't do work with.flightsimmer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:44 am I have the same problem, if there's any background noise at all it makes it hard to understand what someone is saying when they talk to me.
Without hearing aids I'm considered profoundly deaf but with hearing aids, the cheap ones for $1,000 each it brings me up to 80%.
I was just recently retested and told that the only way I could get any better was to spend more money, haha.
Texting is your friend when you are using your phone.
Mine are Bluetooth capable and work very well when using My phone for anything.
I have an Android S-22+ phone and it works with my Bluetooth hearing aids but not with my wife's Android phone, different, cheaper model.rossim92 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 9:03 amyou are lucky. my hearings aids are bluetooth compatible, but only with iphones , i use android phone. not spending 1500 bucks for a phone i don't do work with.flightsimmer wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 8:44 am I have the same problem, if there's any background noise at all it makes it hard to understand what someone is saying when they talk to me.

u heard of selective hearing? now u need selective eyesight, just focus on one mouth at a time, and everything else in the background becomes irrelevant. like hunting, when you focus on shotting that one big buck in your sights, you don't hear the warden creeping up on ya.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2024 2:03 pm Will, yes, Skilsaws, Sawzalls, lawn mowers, chainsaws, airshow addictions plus shooting. Basic manners - where did they go?You want to talk to me then take your nose out of the phone and look me in the eye and talk. If at the dining table chew swallow, think then look at me and speak. Loud and clear. Otherwise keep it to your self. Simple.
That was me until about 12 years ago. Then I had a bout of Ross River Virus and suffered sudden onset hearing loss. Without hearing aids I'm as deaf as the proverbial post and with them I'm really only good for one on one conversations.Ysabel Kid wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 8:01 pm Does anyone else have "strange" or "inconsistent" hearing? I can't hear squat in a crowded room. Just a din of noise. Mrs. YK has started to complain that I can't hear. But put me in the woods - I can hear a twig snap, the pitter patter of small game, and a lot of other things. Just strange.
