Yeah both those are good points. I think there may be other social or behavioral factors too, such as perhaps the 380 people are smart enough to know they need to do close-in vital-zone shots, or know that (many of) their firearms are lower capacity, so don't keep shooting unless they see the need...? Or maybe there are more folks over-confident in the 9mm, or they aren't as accurate with it as they would have been with a 380. Yet the 45 ACP folks did well - perhaps that cartridge is just inherently better (sure makes a bigger hole) or the folks using 45's are more practiced, knowing they have a 'hard to shoot' firearm.

Definitely a lever action 44 Mag is a good home-defense gun though. Every whitetail (maybe 40-50 total) I've shot has been a one-shot quick kill.

In fact the first critter I ever shot with a rr Mag levergun was a one-shot kill - a ferocious chipmunk...!

45 colt, 44 mag and 357 mag from a 16+" barrel are all well established killers. If it will kill a deer, it is snatch the soul right out of a human

I have taken a few Whitetails with a 12ga and slugs. One a Texas Heart shot at 50 yards went the length of the deer and ended up under the skin in it's neck. quite a wound channel . another on a snowy Morning with 6" of powder covering all the tree limbs , a Buck got pushed My way and stopped broadside around 35 yards. A double lung shot ended things in a hurry. The amount of blood and tissue downwind on the saplings from that deer was impressive. A 12ga with heavy shot or buck for close up gets My nod.

.44 Mag or .357 Mag out of a levergun should be enough. No matter what, a poor shot, or a complete miss will not do much. My Dad used to say that a shot in the heart with a .22 lr was better than a miss with a .44 Magnum.
