Grandad's last ship was the Vestal. She was tied up to the Arizona. He lost friends that day.
He had been medically retired early in 1941 after a heart attack. Three days later, with a fuller medical release he was back in uniform at the Naval base in San Pedro, Ca.
He never did get back to sea and died from another heart attack in 1942. He never did get the payback he wanted. But his boys and future SIL's sure as hell did.
