Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
I was over on RanchDog's Rossi forum, and saw a post to the effect that there was only a run of 100 Rossi 92's made in 480 Ruger - if so they are a bit of a collector item...! Kinda wish I'd bought one (or better yet, two).
With Marlins (real ones at least) going by the wayside it makes me wish I'd have bought more 'to sell' instead of 'to keep'. At least if I do sell any, maybe I won't lose money.

We used to have a Rossi 92 trapper in Ruger 480... liked it a lot! Alas, my father sold it.
Re: Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
When they came out I was in LGS and bought the only one I had put eyes on. New.

I bought a Puma 480 a few years back NIB when they were still making them . I had a local dealer order it for me , so when it arrived I couldn't turn it down .
I kept it for 3 years I think and it stayed NIB as I never cared for it and sold it still unfired .
Some folks like them I don't happen to be one of them .
My neighbor that has a couple of Dave Higginbothoms guns also has one of these Rossi/Puma 480's and he likes it well enough .

Re: Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
Not only has Rossi confirmed that only 100 Model 92 carbines were made in 480 Ruger caliber, but those 100 carbines consisted of quite a few different variations.
Stainless or Blued
16" or 20"
Fiber optic front sight, rear steel
Fiber optic front, fiber optic rear
Steel front, steel rear sight
Bolt safety or no bolt safety
Mine has taken a couple of deer and a large black bear using Ranch Dog's 380 grain cast bullets. All three animals went down immediately with a single shot, all three bullets passed completely through the animals. After firing a few hundred rounds and seeing what the cartridge is capable of, I wouldn't hesitate to use it for any North American/Alaskan/Canadian game animal.

Old thread I know, but I ran across it in my research on the 480 Rossi.
I want one... probably never happen. Anyone got pictures they want to share?

.
I do think there's a couple forum members with 480's.
I certainly like my 454 Casull - even the 16" is not unpleasant to shoot, but likely VERY unpleasant to be hit by. I kind of think the 480 is 'cooler', but as silly as it was, being able to shoot 45 Colt in it if I wanted was what made me go for the 454, when they were BOTH in stock at the local Cabela's before they closed.

Can't blame that line of thinking. I am handloading only though so factory availability doesn't really affect me. The only benefit of a cartridge being more common is brass is easier to get. Dunno why, I've always had a thing for the 480 Ruger though.

Re: Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
I think they would be a grand gun, wish I owned one. I almost had a bolt action carbine on 480 ruger done a while back, the costs etc were a bit much. A 50AE on a lever would be even better. I

I have a double rifle in .480 that I am really impressed with.
But I must confess that I have not really done any serious load development. I should though.
Cannon Watts blessed me with a huge box of primed .480 brass and I haven’t done anything with it.

I regret passing over an opportunity to buy a Super Blackhawk in .480. What a very cool revolver.
Thanks for the picture, Harold!

The 500 S&W is pretty cool in a levergun. A bit too much in a revolver though....!

Re: Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
sometime soon i am going to sell the super black hawk 480........the destructive arthiritis in my hands makes it impossible to use anything more than a 44 magnum.
i may post it here in the classifieds when i have time to sell it.

Re: Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
I view the 480 Ruger a bit like the 45 Colt, can be loaded from mild to wild. Most of my shooting is done with either a cast 355gr HP, or a cast 385gr HP. I aim to keep the velocities between 1000 and 1100 feet per second. With a bullet I cast from a Mountain Moulds setup I designed that comes in a little heavier at 395gr and a velocity of 1050 fps, I know 15 gallon water jugs wasn't enough to catch it. Relatively comfortable to shoot in my 6 1/2" Bisley, and good accuracy at 50 yards. Powders I choose more often than not are HS6 and Longshot. I bid on a Rossi 480, but at $1700 it went well outside my comfort zone.

They should have made more of the 480 lever guns. I wish I had one. I have a 454.

Re: Rossi in 480 Ruger...scarce...?
Anyone heard of the 480 Rugers having a sloppy chamber? My buddy had a 92 in 357 and it was so sloppily chambered that brass expanded into the web area so far that they couldn't be resized.
