Winchester Trapper .45 Colt with Tang Safety

Post by sirdutch@gmail.com »

I've got this Winchester 94 AE that I purchased over 10 years ago that I recently "rediscovered" in the back of my safe. I wondered what it was worth as I didn't remember what I paid for it. I was surprised by the almost visceral reaction by some"aficionados" to this firearm.

First off, it has the much hated tang safety which was introduced only a few years before U.S. Repeating Arms, who purchased Winchester, shut down production in 2006. Personally, I can understand that it is not the "traditional" safety mechanism. Of course, their were no "safeties" on the original design so I fully understand why their collector value would be mostly non existent. But hell, it is still a very handy little carbine and one can't buy a new one any more. Or is that true? It will never be like the coveted old timers.

I have read that Fabrique Nationale bought the Winchester brand and perhaps is producing "Winchester type" leverguns somewhere overseas. Of course, they would still be clones. Perhaps someone on this forum would fill in the blanks or shed some light on this here subject. 🤔

Anyhow, it feels nice to have my Colt SAA in my holster that's chambered in .45 Colt while having my Winchester Trapper, chambered in the same caliber, slung on my shoulder. Even if some perfectionist gives me a look of derision. Just sayin! 😀

If it will do what you need it to do I would not give a hoot what someone says about it. Use it and enjoy it. It's a levergun! You can't get much better than that! :)

Mines even worse - it has a cross bolt safety

I’m surprised it even shoots! (Jk)

I always got plenty of hate to go around. Just kidding. I would rather call it my free will to purchase what I like and not just "make due" like I must to in so many aspects of my life. Complaining on line is my way to speak to the industry. Not against any member or gun owner.

First 45LC replica rifles are something I dont own or ever desire to own. I have 45LC revolvers but NEITHER Winchester or Marlin ever made a rifle (back in the day) in 45LC. By my definition any 45LC Marlin or Win is not a replica. Those who carried a rifle with same ctg handgun & rifle had several to choose from. My choice is 44-40. If I am trying to be authentic & practical the 44wcf is my choice. The 45LC is very popular. Good for your selling price.

The 94 may have been chamber in some pistol ctgs, but all I know about are the longer rifle rounds (oh yea 44mag). The 1892 was available in 25-20, 32-20, 38-40 and 44-40 (or WCF to be more accurate). Note NONE in 45LC until recent. The New Haven Winchester company was unable or unwilling to bring back the 1892 so they offered the 94 in 44mag and now you tell me in a 45LC Trapper. That might actually be a collector gun, because I never heard of that one. I guess you have a rare gun to the right 'collector' buyer.

New lever safety designs. My 2c. My favorite is the Marlin. It is easily deleted with a filler screw. Second is less hated (if I can say that) is the tang. I learned how to remove those on Miruko levers and cover the hole with a tang peep like a Marbles. Problem solved. I generally like a tang safety ie. shotguns but it is not authentic for a lever. Also not needed and makes mounting a tang sight difficult. The worse safety IMHO,was the side button on the 94. it looks horrible from a mile away and cannot be cosmetically changed. Lucky I think, that you dont have that.

Angle eject? What can I say? If one needs a lever with a scope choose a more scope friendly model. Browning BLR for example. Or Marlin.

Nobody derides anyone on this forum or my circle of friends. We deride the gun industry. People get their feelings hurt. To them I say, relax. It not about them. None of this really matters in the big picture of life and even if it did, it is certainly not personal.

Nobody here is going to be critical of that rifle. Enjoy it and don’t worry about the naysayers.

My favorite Winchester is Japanese!!

Yep, all the Miroku produced Winchester 94AEs have the tang safety. Much better than the USRA cross bolt safety. Winchester, when it was still held by the Olin Corporation started producing the mdl 94 in 45 Colt in 1985. Traditional mdl 94. While I don't like the AE or safety versions, if you want a 45 Colt levergun that's strong enough for Ruger type loads, that's what you're going to get if new. FN started by investing in USRA back in 1994/5 and finally purchased them out. After closing the Hartford plant in 2006, they started having them made by Miroku shortly thereafter. I have 3 Miroku produced Winchesters, a .45-70 Browning 1886 from 1985, an 1885 Lowwall in 45 Colt from about 2008, and a Highwall in .32-40 from about the same time frame. Miroku produced guns are high quality often surpassing the originals. Like others have said... enjoy it. the 45 Colt is a fun cartridge in a carbine... or even a rifle as a couple of my Ubertis are.

i have the 357 carbine version. nothing about it bothers me. the safety. the wonky hammer. the wonky trigger. the sub-micro-miniature "scope mounts". it just flat shoots. bang bang bang, it self-identifies as a Winchester Dream Liner, and doesn't care what anyone thinks of his looks.

Personally, I never much cared whether my Winnie had a safety or not. A nice rifle is a nice rifle, regardless.

I've got a Wrangler in .44 Magnum from the same time frame, around 2005 or so. It does everything I need it to, it rides a lot of places with me, and I have no complaints. Shoot it and enjoy it!

I'd just be happy to discover something in my gun safe other than dust!

I'd shoot it and be happy. Heck I shoot a beat up Rossi 45, 20" that is actually one of my favorite rifles to shoot. Yours I'm sure is much nicer.

My go to deer rifle for where I live is a Winchester 94AE with the cross bolt safety. I absolutely love that gun and wouldn't take 2,000 for it right now.

I have had several of the current production Winchester lever actions with the dreaded tang safety and rebounding hammer. And I have a Winchester 1894-1994 hundred year commemorative that had that awful looking cross-bolt safety. They all invariably had a heavy trigger pull and suffered misfires. Here's how I dealt with it:

On my Winchester 1886 1 of 500 Limited Edition Deluxe takedown .45-70 rifle used for NRA metallic silhouette shooting, I removed the tang safety, rebounding hammer, and trigger. I installed a hammer & trigger for a Browning 1886 that does not use the safety system and they fit perfectly, giving me a traditional half-cock safety. I then drilled and tapped the tang and installed a Montana Vintage Arms Soule vernier tang sight that covered the holes left by the tang safety removal. (To complete the conversion to a full-blown target rifle the front sight was swapped out for an MVA globe and the rear barrel sight was removed and a slot blank installed).

Image

For my 1894 Winchester Legacy .38-55 with tang safety and rebounding hammer, I removed the safety, hammer, and lower tang components, and installed a hammer and lower tang components from a 70's vintage rifle, again giving me a conventional half-cock safety. The oblong hole left in the upper tang by removing the safety button was filled by a fitted piece of white micarta resembling ivory that I had intended to have my initials scrimshawed on, but I just never got around to it.

Image

The third style of safety removal I did was for the 1894-1994 commemorative with cross-bolt safety. I again started by removing all the unnecessary safety components. This left a large cone-shaped hole in the right side of the receiver and a small round hole in the left side. I filled this by making a custom rod with a .30-30 cartridge head glued to it.

You can read more details about this rifle in a post I made on this forum some years ago...
