I fired these targets using both hands and a rest. The 1 inch group with the .41 was shot resting my hands on a rolled up sleeping bag. I used a backpack for a rest with some of the others. When I shot the elk I laid down in the old silhouette position .. leaning back on my left elbow and resting the sixgun alongside my raised right knee. I ain't steady enough to shoot tight groups at 50 yards offhand. I know there are folks who can do that. And when I was younger I did it at times. But I learned early on if I wanted to make consistant hits at distance I needed help.

I've had a couple of autos surprise me. The old Sig 220 was shot with a range bag for a rest, using Triton 230 SMC- basically a 45 Super. The XDM is a 40 running a Bear Creek 185 SWC about 1050, and was the last 7-8 standing unsupported from 50 yards. I was having a pretty good day

I need to work on shooting from a rest: I’ve never been able to get good results that way.

But I think my limit on game is around 40 yards or so. I’m still working on it but it is not easy for me.

When I was younger I took some deer at 100 yards or so with my sixgun. I prefer sneakin' in and gettin' close. I shot a lot deer at feet instead of yards ... but if I had a good rest and the animal wasn't moving I felt comfortable within a hundred yards. I shot the elk at about 90 yards. BUT ... I did not do it without a rest. Offhand at those distances it don't take much of a wiggle to just wound an animal. I prefer 50 yards or less.

Yep, those are some bragging rights targets. I still shoot some 50 yard targets from the seated back rest position from time to time. My current groups are narrow but tall, since I've painted most of my front sights a nice slime green color that's easy to pick up quick but not so great for consistent elevation in bright light.

Maybe technology and AI will give us a smart front sight that knows when to change from a bright high vis color to flat black for different conditions.
