Very BASIC gun designs… I like ‘em…!

Post by AJMD429 »

.
I had the day off and after dark took one of my rifles out in the rain after chores for a nighttime walk to the river-bottom, just to enjoy the peace and use the quiet time to say a brief prayer concerning the election.

After returning I realized my rifle was soaked.

It was my Marlin 1894cst, and the Ranger Point Precision quick-takedown plus forend design make it a non-issue, versus had I taken the wooden-stocked 1894 I often tote.

There are other designs I really like though, for their basic functionality and ease of cleaning.

Here’s a few:

Marlin 1894, 336
Mauser 98
Kalashnikov 47
Browning 1911

There are many other great designs, but these stand out as ones that one can take apart and clean in the field, with little fear of tiny parts getting lost.

I’d add the UZI to that list. It’s an old school open bolt SMG which isn’t as first-shot accurate as the more modern MP5 pattern, but dang is it simple to break down, clean and keep operational. The MP5 requires all sorts of specialized fiddly-bits to maintain. I admire the German engineering, but I own the Israeli practicality.

Much prefer the Marlins to the Winchesters for ease of takedown and maintenance. 8)

Ruger -Six's.

Probably all Ruger DA's, although the -Six's are the only ones I have personal experience with.

The thing that first got me interested in Marlin lever actions was how simple the Hepburn design was, and how quickly the guns could be disassembled and reassembled. It truly is a design that I know I can take apart and reassemble blindfolded, as I've done it just for fun to see if I could.
Louis Hepburn was a firearms genius who doesn't really get the credit his work deserves.

Remember the single shots. I have a 45/70 and a 20 gauge. The 45 has a 32 inch barrel, and the 20 is 1/16th inch over the exact legal limit, and travels in my tool bag, and can produce 45-like damage when loaded for it.

can't get much simpler can it?
