South Carolina Floods - Prayers up for the folks there...

Of course a '100-year flood' happens every hundred years, and a '200-year' one every 200 years. We forget that, and build in picturesque and convenient places, and on top of that we pave roads and surfaces and so on that increases runoff, and our 'runoff mitigation' structures are typically barely adequate for what we estimate are '100 year events'.

That's not meant as an 'I told you so' or a 'you deserve it', but just that we are living on God's planet, and only God and Mother Nature can really control things like weather and earthquakes - all we can do is prepare, adapt, and cope.

Of course the greedy materialistic opportunists among us (i.e 'Democrats' and 'Progressives' and 'Leftists') use such events to push their agenda of pretend-fighting 'climate change', and funneling money to their big-corporation cronies and the dependent-class poor they buy votes from. Just ignore those sphincters.

Anyway, prayers up for the flood victims - we live in a place where we are near, but comfortably above, the 100 year line, but two years in a row we had OVER NINE INCHES OF RAIN in just TWO OR THREE HOURS. "Greater than 6 inches per hour" rate on radar is purple FYI - I'd never seen that. It hovered over a strip a mile wide and 10 miles long the first time, and that ONLY hit our little hill that juts into the river bottom - so all the other places it fell were riverbottom and unoccupied. Everyone thought I was making it up that our driveway had a three foot trench cut across it and railroad ties, a wheelbarrow, and heavy culvert pipes were all moved a hundred yards or more...!

The next year it was a broad fifty mile thing and wiped out bridges and homes and businesses and a hospital. Our neighbor's house was destroyed when the entire hillside (200 ft hill they were 50 ft up on above the road) fell on to it. The landslide was a quarter mile long and closed the road under several feet of trees and mud.

Floods are scary, and they can sometimes come suddenly despite the best predictions - an hour before the six-inches-of-rain-so-far mark, I don't think anyone could have predicted the carnage.

I have relatives off of i-85 in spartanburg on highway 9 (aka as boiling springs). they are still without electricity.

When we lived in Mozambique we had a cyclone pass north of us about 100 miles away. We got 16" of rain in 2 days. It washed houses away, washed roads and bridges away, killed people, and cut all electricity with downed lines and poles. Bridges were washed out and supplies could not get through.

My best friend lives in North Carolina, east of where the most destruction happened. He reported 29 inches of rain in a couple days west of him! That is devastating! I know a little of what those folks are going through and they do need our prayers and anything else we feel we can do.

Forget 100-or-200-year storms (by the way, you can have 2 or three in a year -- and then not have one for 500 years) ; the last time there was equivalent flooding in the Asheville area, for instance, was 1790. Here in SC, we are beginning to experience flooding from the runoff, as the major Atlantic-bound watersheds all drain through this area.

I live just south of Charlotte and we got a lot of rain and heavy winds, but were largely spared. By that I mean, sporadic flooding (water only started to recede here yesterday), power outages, downed trees, etc. Our water supply comes out of the Catawba river which is now a muddy mess, so all the water is tinted (but supposedly fine to drink). My neighbor two doors down had a tree hit her house, and the same with a neighbor across the street and up a few doors. About half my town lost power but it is largely restored now. My family is all safe, which is all I wanted (for me personally).

We got lucky.

My in-laws in the Greenville SC are have been without power since the storm. We invited them to come up, but they are sticking it out for now.

Western North Carolina is a disaster. From Asheville to Boone is horrendous. Still flooded, no power, roads out, 160+ dead and a thousand missing. The little town of Chimney Rock, where we used to take the kids every summer, was literally wiped off the face of the earth. The response by the federal government has been pathetic and non-existent.

The states are trying to help. The great thing to see is so many people, everyday folks living away from the worst of it, taking their own resources to help out. Our church co-hosted a supply donation event today along with the local 10-13 Club. The Safety Team manned it and we have two pilots on the team who have access to private aircraft and have been flying supplies in non-stop. We'll do this tomorrow and Thursday... and we are only one example. I can think of a dozen others, just in our area. It is really uplifting to see people care.

Unfortunately, the looters have come out too. A sheriff up in NC asked if any of our security officers were available. He'd deputize us, provide shelter and food. Most of us have day jobs so can't help on that front, but I hope they get the help they need.

Most rivers and streams here no longer follow the same paths. We took water and a generator to a friend yesterday and the Ivy River had changed course so much 20” diameter trees complete with roots were washed away and left in the middle of fields.
Whole communities and towns swept away.
I hear the news saying thousands without water. It’s tens of thousands. And it’s going to prolly be months. Miles of water mains washed away. Our town water plant was submerged. New equipment arrived Monday from Charlotte should be flowing some this week. They’ll have to find the breaks and cap or repair.
We are fine. No power and spotty cell with little data. Was able to supply my neighbors with filtered rain water from my 500 gallon cistern. Felt good to help.

Prayers they receive help. I had a patient with hurricane Katrina take a week off his construction and trucking business to haul 60-70 generators there but he gave up due to threats of 'arresting price gougers' since his assumption was he could recoup HIS loss shutting his business down for a week, tying up his truck, and unfortunately buying most of the generators here and there at retail due to time constraints. Pretty sad.

A patient of mine told me that that area has one of the few large lithium deposits in the US, and they were speculating that certain large corporations and government types who are in bed with them, would probably like nothing better than for things to deteriorate so much there that most of the people left and they could buy a property cheap or even condemn it.

After seeing the feds horribly botch pretty much everything around the storm response, I wonder if they learned anything and will vote for the Republicans... or at least not vote this cycle?

I find it rather interesting to note that I have yet to see any leftist/socialist organizations coming to the aid of the people impacted. I've seen plenty of Christians dropping everything to help. I've seen plenty of conservatives doing so as well. Nada on the left.

The pink-haired, multiple-pierced and tattooed "defund the police" crowd in Asheville sure seem happy that law enforcement is doing their jobs. And doing so despite losing their own homes (our local 10-13 Club knows of 7 such officers alone).
