357 reloading question

Post by 4t5 »

Powder manuals say use magnum primers, I can understand when using large amounts of slow powder like H110, but I see no reason for titegroup loads , do you guys use mag primers for all 357 loads ?

I shoot the 357 alot, mostly cast bullets with spp, Unique, TiteGroup, 231, will use spm primers with
H110 or LilGun, but seldom load heavy loads for the 357

I use Small Rifle primers for my Magnum loads. I use regular Small Pistol for everything else.

I don't use magnum primers as a whole. I know these may improve performance, but I'm no longer trying to squeeze that last bit out of each load. But I did just buy a brick of small pistol magnum primers - mainly for when Y2K and I reload for magnums. Regular primers make my loads go boom; that's all I need now.

I only use mag primers for H110/296 in the .357.

The Lyman loading manual indicates that they used magnum primers with all their .357 magnum loads. I don't and never have. I don't use H110/296 in .357 loads. 2400 loads provide high enough velocity and do not require magnum primers. Like Brian Pearce says, magnum primers in .357 loads can raise pressures 8 to 10 thousand PSI over standard primers with no gain in velocity.

Thats all i would need to know before paying him. A deal on primers is a deal on primers, you can use them for regular loads just as well.

I use regular primers unless I'm loading W296. If I have magnum primers on the cheap, I'll use them in a standard plinking load without hesitation, but I'd work up again for any max loads.

The only 357 ammo I load are filled with 3F pushing a 110 gr truncated cone ignited with a SPP.

My Magnum loads all use Small Rifle primers. Everything else is standard primers. Never needed Magnum pistol primers, though I do still have some on hand.
