Last year my great nephew shot his first deer with his dad's CVA muzzleloader at 12 yrs. old. This year he was carrying one of his dad's .30-06 bolt actions, a Ruger 77 SS. After the morning hunt he went to check game cameras around their cabin while the rest of us were getting lunch made. We heard a shot and ran out to see who was shooting so close! We found him with this nice buck he saw lying behind a log near the cabin! The shot was 30 ft. away from my great nephew! He had one choice of a slightly off straight on chest shot, so took it. Kinda messed up one back quarter when the 150 gr. bullet exited.
When we boned it out we found a tiny little .380 bullet in the other hind quarter where someone had recently shot this buck with a handgun! Dug the slug out, and the hind quarter wasn't hurt. But probably explains why it let him get so close and didn't run.
Buck was just behind their cabin:
We had a great meal of bacon wrapped backstraps, but the young hunter missed out as his mom took him home Sunday noon to make sure he didn't miss anymore school! We sent him pictures of our meal and thanked him!

There's a lot of pine around their cabin, but as you get away from the cabin it turns to mostly scrub oak, and open rocky grasslands. My ankles are worn out from walking across so much rocky terrain, and will take days to get back to normal.
We think the nephew's neighbor shot the buck as he told us he's having problems with deer on his property eating pine tree seedlings he's planted. He invited us to hunt his property also in hopes we'd take out some deer, but we didn't see any there except for one doe.
All of the hunters were pretty disgusted when we found out the buck had been shot with a .380 after finding the bullet. Could have easily run the deer off with a shot in the dirt instead.
