Fall deer hunting

Post by marlinman93 »

Once again it's deer season and like last year I'm not buying a tag, license, or packing a rifle. Last year I went along just to enjoy the time in the woods with my family, and enjoyed it as much if not more than when I packed a rifle! So I'm heading out again Sunday to join the hunt again with my brother, nephews, and some friends.
Nephew has 240 acres a few hours East of me in Washington State, so we'll setup at his cabin, and use his workshop as our sleeping and eating headquarters. His father inlaw has been trying to fix up the cabin all summer, but not sure if it's ready to use yet, so not planning on staying in it yet.
I wont be without any firearm as I'll have my old 1964 Colt 1911 pistol and plan to take my Rolling Block in .22LR just for plinking around camp. Everyone likes shooting the .22 Roller, so I'll make sure I take plenty of ammo too!
Hopefully someone will take a buck this year! His area is a 3 point or better, which means one side of the rack has to have 3 points at least. That eliminates a lot of forked horns they see each year, unless a fork has a brow tine.

Good for You!! Hope it's a great time. Yep We just need to get out and Go. This week My Son and I took My boat out to a local large lake and did some fishing, caught a few fish but the time with Him is priceless. Enjoy. :D .

Pretty much I'm making same choice. I've mostly just bowhunted this time of year for past 8 years till rifle opener in November. And none my family or friends like deer hunting anyways, so I've been on my lonesome. Already me and my brother, who used be a squirrel hunting fanatic, but where he lives he don't have any hunting grounds. So he's come up my way twice already, and last time we got with my best friend. Wasn't much game were we went, only one squirrel killed, but I took my Coleman stove, and at mid day, we had a good meal and good chairs! Hard to leave afterwards! But we're planning the same to another spot.
Myself, I love deer hunting with any weapon, but here? There's not many deer, and last year i went into it with a hard nose to be successful! And lotta hours glued to a tree, either in a stand or on ground in a tree seat. I never saw a single deer in 175 hours plus. Until I put my feet on ground in the rifle season, then I got a small buck. But it's just too painful to sit that still in the cold, and squirrels most often around?
This year, I'm just still hunting, usually with a 22, enjoying the woods wherever i may roam, until Muzzleloader season then rifle season! Then I'll do the same with a deer rifle!

Doing kind of the same thing but still carry a rifle with rounds in the magazine and nothing in the chamber. Still hunt them hard via still hunting and tracking. When I see one I take the shot just like I would if there was a round in the chamber. Click but no bang. Get to hunt all season this way.

I carried my 1964 dated colt .45ACP throughout the hunt. Didn't fire a shot from it as coyotes only came out at midnight, and didn't see any of the cougar we saw on the game cameras. But that's a good thing!
Only one buck taken by my great nephew, but three guys are still up there for tomorrow's hunting.
