I have to stay out of Pawn Shops

Post by TedH »

Stopped in a local toy store today looking for something totally unrelated, and spied this H&R Classic Carbine. The owner made me a deal I couldn't say no to, especially since this is the only one of these I've ever seen.
I love the straight grip stock and schnabel fore end. The compactness being a break open just makes me giddy. It'll be a joy to tote in the deer woods.
I have the big 300 gr Lee WFN mold, hoping it has a fast enough twist to shoot those well. Fun times ahead.

Awesome score.

I kick myself every time I think about the H&R handi rifle in 357 magnum I swapped off.

You done well on a dandy handy rifle, I'd grabbed it too if I had the money!

Ted, when I worked at Sportsman's Warehouse post-retirement about 17 years ago, that very model sat in the rack for months and months and I finally bought it. I believe I had more fun with that versatile little carbine than about any gun I have owned, and regret having let it go. Take it from me -- it is truly a keeper and congratulations.

What bullets did yours prefer? I have a ton of 300 gr XTPs , and I'm hoping the big Lee cast bullets will shoot good. Should be able to push either one of those 1500 fps or more.

Ted, I don't recall a preference. I shot both cast and jacketed handloads with pleasing accuracy, but don't recall any specifics except the smile I had on my face. 8)

Cool!
I was looking at one at a show a few years ago and put it down. Went back to look again and it was gone. I hate that!

Like some of the others have written about regretting trading off a good shooting H&R, I have to admit guilt here as well. I has one in .22 Hornet that was a little tack driver. I was living inside the city limits at the time and didn't have much use for it and traded it off. Dumb thing to do.

Have fun with that .45!

Jason, the one I regret selling the most was the Wesson and Harrington 1871 Classic in .38-55. Their Buffalo Classic in .45-70 was a nice one, too.

I'm one of the guys who has frequently whimpered about the "stooopid slow twist" of the Rossi 44 rifle. But what I wanted out of the 44 was to be able to shoot to 600 yards for our local "Little Q" competition. My Rossi shoots the 300 grain LBT LFN (long flat-nose) bullet pretty reliably to 150 yards (kinda' goes to manure by 200) which would be plenty fine for woods hunting purposes. I'm betting you'll be just fine even if your baby has a slow twist in it. It's only us fellers wanting to get to the longer ranges that really need to worry about twist rates.

My Rossi would drive tacks at 50 yards with the 300 grainer, be fairly deadly on tin cans at 100 yards, usually hit our 150 yard turkey silhouette reliably, and would still be fairly deadly on barn doors at 200 yards.

That would have been a full-house load using ww296 powder for somewhere close to 1750 fps I'd guess.
