Old 33 WCF still getting it done

Post by Guide89 »

Colorado Shiras cow moose .
Winchester 1886, manufacture date 1922. Chambered in 33 WCF. It is takedown. Someone put an old steel Lyman 66 on it before I bought it.
I formed the brass from Starline 45-70, using 45.5 grains of Varget on top of a Federal large rifle match primer, all pushing a 210 grain .338 Nosler Partition with the tip filed off to 2,200 feet per second.

One shot broadside, she went 40-50 yards. Bullet went through the front shoulder and stopped on the hide on the off side.

I could have shot her at 220 yards if I had a scoped magnum, but sneaking down through the willows to 52 yards to use this old rifle made the hunt special.

Excellent Yes! That's hunting way it should be, with a rifle made for that purpose, congrats and good post and pic! That Partition looks to be a pic of what bullet performance is meant to be.

Congratulations on a great hunt with a great old rifle!
I went back to hunting with my old guns the last decade I hunted for the same reason. It just felt more like hunting than a modern scoped bolt action did.

One of the reasons I don't hunt from a tree stand. Sure... I'd be almost guaranteed success on my land. But I hunt from the ground. I got made a few years ago, a buck came up behind me and snorted and ran off when I moved. But the deer I've killed were more than meat in the freezer to me.

A friend of mine went along on the first modern Colorado moose hunt way back in the late 20th Century. It's great to see that they've progressed to the point of allowing cows to be taken too. That looks like some good eating and wonderful memories. Taking big game with handloads makes it special, but taking big game with a classic "obsolete" cartridge makes it even MORE memorable! Congratulations!! Well done!!!

Yep, there are even occasional moose in the northernmost parts of New Mexico.
