While helping check in guns at our local show, guy came in with an 1894 in 30 WCF. 5 digit s/n (palindrome also) with a pistol grip stock and what looked like a 28" barrel (nickle steel). Supposedly made in 1897. Was trying to get him to price it, but he never would. Not a 94 fan, but somehow that one struck my fancy.

Wish I would have taken a few pics of the thing. Octagon barrel also. Never did see it leave or on a table. Someone must have bought/traded for it and put it away in a case.

Re: 1894 Winnie
that's still debatable in some circles... is a gun "born on date" when the serial number is applied, or when it's completed and transferred to the warehouse? IMO, either is a valid date significant in the life cycle of a firearm... why not the date the initial forging was done?

Winchester had a history of cleaning up old parts, and I'm sure that would include receivers.

Re: 1894 Winnie
As far as Winchesters the serial number was applied in the polishing room after final polish was done .And such ledgers were held and now in Cody firearms Museum . When you get a factory letter it tells both dates .Griff wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2024 6:49 pmthat's still debatable in some circles... is a gun "born on date" when the serial number is applied, or when it's completed and transferred to the warehouse?
