the rifle is an old model marlin 1894 , from the early 1900s. it is a short rifle with octagonal barrel and full mgazine. still has pretty nice case colors, and is amazingly accurate
the six shooter is a new model ruger black hawk, that was converted to 25/20 by a smith here in anchorage.at 25 yds it is shoots groups that are about one ragged hole ! [ subsequently Gary Reeder fitted a 256 cylinder to this pistol and it works well; it forms a pair with a marlin model 62 lever action in 256 winchester ]
So, what did the Ruger start life as? I've been looking to get a companion to the Winchester I bought from you years ago!
The .25-20 WCF is such a fun cartridge. Now, unless you are made of money, it is a reloading proposition to shoot one. Darn they want obscene money for a box of the stuff!
so true and i have reloaded it for more than 30 years. about 2o years ago, there were two big estate sales here in alaska, while the economy was really down. both of them had boxes and boxes of 25/20 and 32/20 factory loads. i got them for 5-10$ per box or less.
i was just looking at my inventory and i see more than twenty 50 round boxes of 25/20 and a similar number of 32/20 ! i was a hog and i am happy that i was !
i have that 1894 marlin and also a model 27 marlin 25/20 pump, a remington model 25 25/20 pump, and a marlin 27 and remington 25 in 32/20 as well. good that i have a rounds to keep them fed ! i had a great little model 53 winchester in 25/20 but it disappeared years ago during the divorce [ along with a list of other similar treasures ]
the ruger was a 357 blackhawk. he lined the barrel and similar for the chambers. you cant tell it to look at it.
that little 25/20 model 1892 you got from me is a a real special rifle ....in its configuration and australian markings !!
I've been looking at dabbling with the 25-20 lately, I've found a couple of Marlin 1894CL leverguns on Gunbroker and thought I'd give them a try, but wasn't sure. This isn't helping! LOL
"When the shooting stops, and the dead are buried, and the politicians take over; it all adds up to one thing: a lost cause."
It's a great round! The( orignal ) World Record Jordan buck was shot with a 25-20.
I have 2, a Savage 23B and a mini Farqueson falling block. My Savage was my mid range pasture poodle gun and the longest shot I made was 273 paces, took me 2 to get it done though.
1/3rd more bullet weight than a 22, only uses about 13 grains of powder. Only drawback is finding brass. One of the reasons whenever I see a box on a shelf I buy it regardless of the price tag.

that is a very handsome rifle. I shot a couple of deer with my 25/20. I don't recommend it, but it is fun to shoot.
