Re: Rossi Rio Grande vs. Marlin 1895 Action
Thanks guys. I guess my Google Fu is a little weak these days as I couldn't find anything relevant when I searched. I do appreciate the point about the weight, and that is one of my concerns with the Rossi. I think I'll just have to try to handle both before I make a decision.

Rossi Rio Grande vs. Marlin 1895 Action
I've been planning to get a 1985GS when I get the funds pulled together, but I just recently found the Rossi Rio Grande, which has a larger magazine and lower MSRP. I don't know enough about either action to decide which to get. Any education would be greatly appreciated.

OK, so after some more research, I'm starting to lean toward a mag tube type of front mount. Again, though, I can only find blued ones, no stainless.

Hmm, I'll call Uncle Mike's on Monday. Getting kinda interested in the idea of making my own though... we'll see if I manage to resist the impractical urge. Nickel plated just won't cut it.

Stainless Swivel Studs
I'm looking for a set like this one from Uncle Mike's where the front stud threads into the barrel band, but in stainless. Anyone have any ideas or will I have to make my own?

Yup, like everyone has said, gotta know more about it. The other issue when talking about strength is you have to look at all the different ways in which metals can be considered strong (tensile, hardness, etc.).

Buy a Pendleton. Best gun safe available. Get the biggest safe you can afford, you'll need it sooner than you think.

Re: Rossi 92 .38/.357 Feeding Problem
I've loaded a lot of .357 and run it through my Rossi with no problems. Never crimped any of 'em either. Any time I had some shells that wanted to hang up I just worked the action quickly and crisply and they popped right in. I do know that my father-in-law had to polish the dickens out of his Marli...

Re: Chiappa 1886 Kodiak Trapper--anyone seen these yet?
I got to play with one at SHOT and it was beautiful. The action was very tight, but smooth. It think with a proper cleaning and working the action some it'd open right up. I can't remember about the barrel, but I think it was half-octagon.

Re: What gun really won the West ?
Actually, the gun that beat the Native Americans was the Springfield Trapdoor.
The gun that protected and fed the settlers was the shotgun.
The guns that maintained the peace and perhaps "tamed" the west were the Colt 1873 SAA and the Henry/Winchester '66/'73.

Re: OT Rifled Musket Accuracy
I've got a .58 1863 Springfield replica and a Hawken replican in .50, and from my experience patched balls are much more accurate than minie balls. Could be the set trigger on the Hawken that makes the difference though. *shrug* In either case they're pretty accurate. I honestly can't remember havin...

I can't imagine why the mainspring would just go out like that, but it could happen. OTH, do I understand that while the gun was set up the same in your tests, you were not using the REAL bullets until you actually got out into the field? Did you happen to change powders between your testing and you...

Interesting. Sounds to me like the mainspring. Now, you did say that with the the exact same setup you did a bit of load testing and didn't have this problem right?

Re: BP Percussion Question????
If you changed the nipple between your original tests and when you began noticing the blow-back then I can guarantee it's either the hole size or the channel shape. Also when you say that you can vary the load as much as 40 grains and you still get blowback that tells me it's an issue with the nippl...

Never have gotten rid of a gun. I was about to thin the collection but then there was an "accident" in our household and I figure I'd better make sure I've got guns to pass along to the little tyke. My first gun was a Ruger Old Vaquero, 4.5in BBL, SS, .357 and a Puma '92, 24in BBL, SS, .35...

I own a '97 4-Runner and wanted to do some mod work to beef it up as my desert rig. I went to the local mod shop and asked where I might find a front bumper/brush guard for the truck.
