Let me make it three of us. Speer Nitrex loaded with 130 gr. Grand Slams, & the 5 round boxes are the best. I've tried the same bullet with several powders, & cannot get groups equal to the factory round. I wish they would do another run. It is the best factory ammo I have ever used in any c...

The Empire fifle is beautiful. But I can't help thinking that every wealthy guy buying one is causing the destruction of an existing original 99. Somehow, that just seems sad to me.

Great info. Your results didn't surprise me, as the 200 gr. bullets just seem to die after 200 or so yards. Some years back, I began to seriously reload for my .358. I wanted a legitimate 300 yard elk cartridge. Today, my most commonly used loads are the 225 Sie., 225 Partition, & 250 Speer(both...

Re: OT - Any 35 Whelen OR Remington pump rifle experience?
86er, I've owned several Remington pump rifles over the years, probably a throwback to my early years in PA. Most have been 30-06's, & have been 1.5 inch shooters. Be careful how much scope you put on one, as they seem to get heavy & out of balance in a hurry. The triggers are not the best, ...

Kaferhaus, Your post reminds me of my own experience. I have a pretty little 700 Classic in 6.5x55, that seems to show every day afield in some way. I've spent hours restoring it to pristine condition, & now use it only sparingly. Meanwhile, my old 94 Trapper gets no special treatment, literally...

I think we'd better get used to seeing more & more plastic. Bottom metal used to be steel, then aluminum, now plastic. Manufacturers claim that it is actually stronger, & it may be. one thing is certain, it is lighter weight. So, it's not all bad news. Jim

Try Grice Gunshop in PA. They do not show their full product line on their website, only the current sales brochure; so you will need to call them. This is a very large retailer, & they regularly feature special runs. Currently, they are selling .284 ultra light A-Bolts, so maybe they have cartr...

Re: Poll: Do you own a "Trapper" length lever gun?
My Trapper is Model 94 in 30-30, purchased new in 1980 or 81. It was originally fitted with gold post front sight & Williams receiver, & was used as a deer rifle in GA. In 1983, we moved to CO, & it was my only deer-elk rifle for several years. Recoil was stout with Fed. Prem. 170 Partit...

I may bring my Blr into the shop for refinishing after the upcoming late season elk hunt. The Browning gloss is much tougher than most others I have seen. It's really quite scratch resistent.

Re: BLR Long action
The Blr trigger has never bothered me in a hunting situation. Honestly, I cannot recall a single case, where I could blame a badly placed shot on the trigger. If I could make changes in the design, I would tone down the gloss finish, & enlarge the trigger guard & lever to better accomodate h...

Re: BLR Long action
The long action BLR does lack some of the quickness & ease of carry that is associated with its short action brother. It's a full size rifle, & should be properly compared to a full size bolt action. I have shot the L.A. model in 30-06 & .270. They were accurate, quicker on target & ...

Markbo,
I know a bunch of 25-06 lovers, & some are primarily elk hunters. I have never owned one, although it is on my "must do" list. It offers a lot of performance with so little recoil.

Re: OT- 257 Weatherby Magnum ??????
Timothy, As I understand the concept, extra freebore relieves an initial pressure spike that occurs if the bullet contacts the rifling too quickly. This translates to being able to add more powder to the casing. Of course, seating the bullet out also adds to case capacity. I would guess that the bul...

No question, a Weatherby platform is the only way to go. Weatherby has probably sold more ultra velocity rifles than everyone else combined. To my knowledge, no one else can offer you the long freebore for extra fps, while maintaining such exacting accuracy. In my opinion, their stock design is the ...

In my case, the beer of choice is tied by tradition to the activity at hand. It's Miller High Life in elk camp, in honor of a favorite hunting buddy; formerly of Bozeman, MT, & now in Gillette, WY. PBR's are with us on all trout fishing outings. Coors Original when on the boat or camping in the ...

Re: What is the 30-30 Trapper load Hobie reproduced?
The 85 gr. Sierra bullet is probably meant for use in CZ and Russian handguns chambered in .30 Mauser. Is the bullet sufficiently blunt for safe use in a tubular magazine? Also, Hornady makes a similiar bullet weighing 86 grains. They advertise that has a heavy jacket, & is designed for use in h...

Re: reloading the .358 Win. ???
Full length resizing with standard dies should do the trick. If you don't fully resize, the bolt may sometimes fail to lock up. The gun will then not fire. I use .358 headstamped brass. After 5 loadings, I use them in light practice loads. My hunting loads are not max, but are considerably hotter th...

Re: Browning BLR's - do you ever see any on the shelves anywhere
Hobie has a very good point. BLR's do take a bit of getting used to. People who have them seem to like them. Back in the 1980"s, while living in greater Atlanta, I was told by a dealer that Brownings top BLR market was the South. I never saw one while hunting in Georgia. Since moving to Colorad...

Re: Browning BLR's - do you ever see any on the shelves anywhere
You might try a store that specializes in Browning goods; not just firearms, but clothing, etc. BLR's have become pretty pricey. You've probably noticed that many dealers are stocking lower end rifles; such as Howa, Vanguard, Savage, Tikka, etc. Our local Browning dealer has 7 or 8 on the rack right...

My .358 BLR did have a Leupold mini 4X in Millett rings until recently. It now sports a fiber optic front & Williams receiver sight setup. It amazes me how fast I can get on target now. My sightin is the same as always; zero at 150 yards. With the bigger bullets, I use TAC & magnum primers e...

Try Reloader 7, or either 4198. Check your manuals, but I believe your start to max ranges run from 40 to perhaps 44.5 grains for all three powders. These are quick burners, so please proceed cautiously. This is a good deer bullet. I always feel empowered when using it, since the weight & initia...

Congratulations on a fine deer. The .358 Win. is a superb cartridge, as you now know. It becomes even better when you develop some good handloads for it.
