I've kilt many an elk with the 45-70, of the big Roosevelt flavor! My favorite load consists of a 420gr cast at 1512fps. I've yet to need a second shot and have never recovered a bullet.

I have taken a couple nice bucks and one elk with the 300gr Speer in the .444. I get about 1900fps with it out of my T/C and never recovered any of the bullets. There was a bit of indication on all of them as to some expansion, especially the elk!

I've turned into my Dad :oops: I have 3 or 400 of each make of bullet but I save them for a 'rainy day'. Instead, I seem to kill all my elk with cast bullets when using a .45-70! In my Marlin Cowboy I use a 278gr cast sized to .379 and 31.5grs of 3031. I don't know the velocity but it even an elk can't stop it :mrgreen:

I have a Model 64 in 25-35 that is the most accurate rifle I've ever shot. Better than any bolt *I've* owned. 5 five shot groups one day, the largest being 3/4" and the smallest 2 were 1/2". That is with 1960's factory W-W 117gr ammuntion. I've not yet found any handloads that will break 1...

I"ve had real good luck with 31 1/2grs of 3031 and a 275gr GC cast bullet sized .379. Haven't a clue to velocity but she shoots through both sides of a bull elk :mrgreen:
