Re: 45 Colt range Report--Update

I've been loading 2400 in .357, .44, .41 and .45 Colt for over 30 years now. I've always noticed a few yellowish unburned granules of powder in the bore, but I think it was Elmer Keith who said that those didn't matter. He always recommended a heavy crimp on sixgun loads, and regular, rather than ma...

Re: How do you handle "The Question"

The other day I had to go to the town office to pick up my pistol permit renewal. Young fella standing there at the counter heard me ask the clerk for the permit. He says 'What kinda gun you carry?' I was kind of non-plussed. Never had a stranger ask me a question like that. I just stared at him for...

Re: The legacy of an 1886 Winchester

I debated adding my story. Bear with me, and remember, I was a dumb kid. Excuse the length of this, there are lots of details that have to be included for it to make sense. When my Dad died I was ten. A 'friend' had an old gun of his, and I was promised it would be returned to me 'sometime'. Three y...

Re: Marlin 336 and the 35 Remington

My first deer rifle was also a .35 Rem. Marlin: a 1962 336SC. Pistol grip stock, half magazine. I set it up with a Redfield Sourdough front sight and a Williams Foolproof rear, and it was my 'shoots everything' rifle for two years. I put hundreds of pistol bullets through it, shooting crows, groundh...

Re: New to me Super Blackhawk ... Thanks for your input

Every handgunner should have a Super Blackhawk! Mine came to me when I traded a beloved .38 Super Colt, so I could shoot silhouette. My gunshop guy was a pal...had this one set aside because it had a minimum cylinder gap, and the range rod showed near perfect alignment between barrel and cylinder. T...

Re: OT---T/C .50 cal White Mountain Carbine Muzzleloader

I think a good scouring might give you a shootable barrel. Your pic doesn't look so awful A lot depends on how things are way down deep near the breach. T/C is noted for their customer service...if you can't get it to shoot, before investing nearly 300 bucks in a new barrel, I'd send it off to T/C (...

Re: OT---T/C .50 cal White Mountain Carbine Muzzleloader

The WMC is discontinued now, and some parts may be on the scarce side. Still, barrels will be available for a long time. The WMC was made with two different barrel twists: 1 in 28" and one in 48". The faster twist is only intended for sabots. I have a 'Gray Hawk': stainless/synthetic: a cl...

Like Wrangler John, I was born and grew up for my first six years 'beside the tracks'. Everyone in my neighborhood worked for the RR (The Boston and Maine Line, as was.) Mr. Pope across the street was a long-haul engineer, as was his next door neighbor Earl Jones. I lived with Jones for a while, fos...

Re: Checking out Paco's Acc'rzr

Yep, Phase IV is what I have. For the test of the Federals, I used the .203" tool in my Ruger SSS. Seems to fit the bore better. I've also been fooling with some hollowpoints and the cup pointer tool, which I have high hopes for as a vermin load. Talk about a gaping hole in the head! I think I'...

Checking out Paco's Acc'rzr

I've been curious about Kelly's Acc'rzr for quite some time. A week or so ago, I re-read the 'redesign' post in the Stickies, and decided to order a unit for .202" thru .205". It arrived today, and I'm very pleased with it on short acquaintance! For those who may be considering the purchas...

Re: My .35 Rem handloads outperformed leverevolution

I haven't had my old 336SC Marlin for a long time now, but back in the '60's it was my only rifle, and I used it for everything. Hornady 200 gr. roundnoses with IMR 3031 was the deer/bear load. With the Williams Foolproof/Sourdough post front sight setup I had, it would stay under 2-1/2" at 100...

Re: rumors of new savage M 99

I'd be tempted if it were re-created in the style of the 30's-40's: straight comb, schnable forend, iron sights, and of COURSE, brass cartridge-counter rotary magazine! I've had a jones on for one just like the one Roy Chapman Andrews took to the Gobi desert when I was a kid, ever since I saw a pic ...

Re: Not all the firearms discussed here are leverguns....

Shucks, I think there's plenty to talk about with the REAL leverguns that are so abundant. I wouldn't go for 'honorary' status for any bolt rifle, nice as the Krag is, for example. I'd stretch a point to include the Ruger #1 and similar drop-block single shots, and even the Civil War Spencer carbine...

Poissonilly, I don't see what's the matter with the Marlin crossbolt safety. I have one on my .45-70, but not on my .357. What I really think was gross was the raised hump side safety boss on the Winchesters of a few years ago. Looked like the gun had a goitre. I guess they did away with it just bef...

If lifting the carrier higher by a smidgin would solve the problem, instead of shimming the cam, and since you say it's soft, wouldn't just taking a punch and raising a couple or three dimples on the cam surface work to extend the 'lift'! I've tightened sights that way. The raised surface is only a ...

I remember the Shooting Times article that wrote up Major George Nonte's bear hunt with the 1911. At the time, Lee Jurras (?) was pushing his SuperVel high velocity ammo for defense and LE, and even at the time, the idea of taking Boar or Bear with the .45 was viewed as pretty much a promotional stu...

Joe, I'd like to know exactly what post sight and height you use with a Williams aperture? (Mine's a Williams side-mounted 5D.) When I fixed up my .357 Marlin 1894c 18-1/2", I put on an original Redfield Sourdough that I lucked onto at a gun show. It's a bit short at .432 (no ramp.) With the Wi...

I don't see red dots as better than a good old-fashioned peep on a lever gun. If someone needs a little help seeing out of old eyes (I sure qualify!) then a low powered compact scope makes sense. But most electronic sights add bulk around the waist of a trim lever gun (pregnant sows come to mind) wi...

When I had a Ruger .44 Auto (original model) I put a nice little steel Weaver K 1.5 on it. It was perfect for a gun of the type. Fast, big field. I traded the Ruger and, like a fool, the scope, in '84, for my Marlin 1895. The Marlin has a Williams Foolproof on it. Don't know which would be better. T...
